What my comment about The union was directed at is that it has no place in or around education, Unions promote mediocrety, which is bad in a school. Education should be totally performance driven, push the good techers get rid of the bad ones...

California actually just tried to pass a bill like this paying teachers by the test scores of their students... I wouldn't make anything because the students I have don't even speak english yet they are tested in only that language. So does that make them average?

You sir have obviously never set foot in a classroom. First of all i taught 7 & 8 grade science, my class size was between 38 and 42. Getting paid $34 an hour are you smoking crack???Yes that is correct I get paid less than a 14 year old babysitter. Typically i put in 10 hour work days and only get paid for nine months of the year. What does that average out to?? Add in the $1300 I used out of my own pocket to buy supplies because incompetent voters like you cut education funds.

Oh yes and because i only work nine months of the year i only get paid nine months of the year so in the summer I get to apply for summer jobs.

I suggest that next time you open your mouth you actually have some experience with the subject...which means yes pull your head out of your A$$.

Sounds a little over the top to me. It's a good sign things have gone too far when you have costumes involved. -_-

One more tidbit out there... I have a computer based job and I have never made a power point presentation. (I've fallen asleep in my share but never made one). ;)

James I am sure you will figure something out.

Now Take the average - Consider yourself the exeption. I'm sure there is more to determining whether a teacher is a good teacher or not then test scores. consider the media. It may not be the case in CO but in Utah you get paid year round - salary and only work 9 months out of the year. And before you go accusing someone of being an uneducated a$$ you may want to check with the burea of labor and get your facts strait. According to the Burea of Labor the average wage of a teacher is 38451 now 9 months =19 paychecks. 2 weeks per paycheck 6 hours per day (per DOL) $33.73/hour. I opologize if I offended you, but namecalling is unnecessary. consider the facts.

So Nosty why aren't you a teacher?
The fabulous $38/k a year, 3 months off, 30 happy kids in each class, and the unions making sure you have whatever the teachers union thinks you need?
I heard they have a demand for math teachers.

(Ignore those stories of drugs, kids pulling a knife on teachers, kids with behavioral problems, the stories are probably made up)

BTW I believe teachers are paid once a month.

I'm not saying that Unions are all bad, They most definatly have their place. You work for Union Pacific right? Which employs what 40-60,000 people, the company could easily decide that the $8.00/hour they pay in benefits isn't worth it... the Union keeps them honest.

What my comment about The union was directed at is that it has no place in or around education, Unions promote mediocrety, which is bad in a school. Education should be totally performance driven, push the good techers get rid of the bad ones which is a MAJOR hangup in Utah -medocrety-

Having a significant amount of secular education, I beleive it is significantly less valuable then what a person learns in the school of hard knocks. I have seen a mechanical engineer that could build anything on a computer, but could barely operate a remote - I've seen people that dropped out of High School write tighter code then people with BS in Computer science. You most definatly have my respect.

Correct, UNION Pacific. :p I'm a bit defensive when people complain about unions. I have been in the non-union boat and complained about the 'high-paying' jobs the union employees had. I had a hard time finding a reliable job in Utah that paid over $12/hr, until I got on with the UP.

I see your point and I know what you mean concerning unions. I'll let Catherine tackle the unions & teachers thing. :greg:

Thanks guys, we have already talked to the principal, about a week and a half ago.

she has some warped sense and believes in giving very little hands on instruction, thus the issues in her classroom.

she actually set a note home to the whole class just before parent teacher conferences, to have us parents( whole class) to tell our children to behave in class. Now what the hell is up with that????

I told the principal if I had to come to class to keep the kids inline then he better be fork'n over some cash, because I don't make money to babysit a 5th grade class.

The part I don't understand is he has always been a steady B average student, so that is why this is all such a kick in the pants/shock/frustration.

Catherine, don't get me wrong I respect what you and others do.

I really didn't mean to offend anyone - I was just expressing my point of view. Isn't that wat a forum is for. My uncle is a Union secretary for UMWA 13Something and we have had some union arguments that have nearly forced us to part company to make a long story short, we agree to disagree.

I'de have to take a pay cut and I don't think the kids would survive :)

In our school district it is bi-monthly.

I used to work at a technology service center for 4 school districts here in Utah. I was payed by government grant funding, so I can't say the pay was bad... and the some of the state benefits were VERY nice.

After being around quite a few teachers and "ex-teachers" I've formed the opinion that the good teachers don't get paid nearly enough, and all of the others get paid too much.

If you think about it... there are a lot of cats in administrative positions getting fatter as other funds from schools are constantly getting pulled. I say remove some of those 'do-nothing' admin jobs and put the money back into the district where it belongs. Then maybe we'll see some happier teachers that will be able to afford and utilize tools to help them do their job.

Also - need to get rid of the elementary teachers that think it's part of the core to teach the kids a song about brigham young. I'm sorry, but that's what church is for... I can't believe that stuff still happens in public schools. :ugh:

James - can you request that your kid be placed into a different class with different teacher because of these problems? It seems to me that they would probably be willing to do so.

If the principle ignores the request, go higher... go to the board.

i was in gifted and talented classes and a 5/6 split class and we didn't have to do busy work like that. some of the hard work i put into school later on i am thankful for... but busy work is crappy no matter how old you are. how does dressing up in a costume help you learn????
i didn't have to do a powerpoint presentation until english 2010... like 2 years ago!
my mom and my sister are teachers and i definitely respect their living, but there are some really crappy teachers out there. remind yourselves that there are idiots in every profession, teachers just have a way of sticking out :D

This is in the works, sorta, he has untill after xmas holiday to give us feedback on his observations of her class. But I told him that I really don't see my opinion of her changing and I want him out. But size of classes is a concern, there are enough kids in each class that its just not (supposedly) easy to just switch classes. I just do not wish to see my child fail when he is really trying.

I also talked to some other parents whos kids had her, and needless to say none have anything overly, lets say, nice to say about her.

...............I am a little aggrevated.

My 5th grader has 2 six page reports due Dec, 22.

One is a auto biography, about his birthday's, which he has had 11 of including the one today.

It has to have a cover page, a table of contents in the form of a time line, plus the six pages about his birthdays. All typed in no bigger than a 14 font, top and bottom margin of 6 spaces and 1" margins on the sides.

The other is on the orginal 13 colonies, which he has already had to build a house for that reprsents where a shipwright would live. It has to be done in powerpoint, which he can only use when he is at school. For which they only see about 15-20 minutes of computer time a day, because they have 8 computers and 30+ kids. Oh yeah and he has to have a costume, that represents a shipwright, to play out some skit about the colonies on top of all the other crap.

This is in addition to all the normal class work they are expected to get done on a daily basis.

This is driving me and my wife insane. How in the hell do you expect a 5th grader to do all this and still have a life?

At this point my wife and I feel we are back in school.

I just think this is a bit of a stretch and quite a bit of work for a 5th grader.

not to mention who gives a crap about what happen with the colonies. Focus more on teaching them how to do the report then what its about.

Oh yeah by the way my daughter had this same teacher when she was in the 3rd grade (7years ago) and all this woman want to focus on is history. My daughter still to this day dislikes this woman, for which we don't let her talk about the teacher in front of my son as to not discourage him.

and yes, I really dislike this woman.

rant off:

What School is this? I know that you live over by where I grew up. And still have family going to school in that area.

...P.s. You must be an English teacher - You have nearly perfect sentence structure and grammer.

You must not have paid attention in English class - your spelling reflects it. Also, teachers in Utah don't make $38k, nor do they only work six hours a day. Where did you get that? My friend is an elementary school teacher, he makes around $23k and works from seven in the morning until four or five in the afternoon, with a 45 minute lunch. What's that, ~9 hours a day?

On topic, James, sounds like your kid's teacher is a whacko. I wasn't required to do a six page paper until my senior year of high school, and even then the six pages included the title page and bibliography. And I didn't use Powerpoint until English 1010, but I think it's good that kids are encouraged to learn computer skills with various programs. It's where the future is going, you can't hardly wipe your butt without using something electronic.
