another question..........................how many kids in or around 5th grade can type, without using the hunt and peck method?

I would think this is something that should be learned before they should be expected to type reports. Lets face it you need skills and some experience and often times guidence to accomplish tasks in life.

BTW, his report (only one of them) is already up to 937 words and is only 5 1/4 pages  and this is with the wife doing most of the typing.

I appreciate what you guys are saying. I just don't feel the kids have the skills to complete the task. She gave them a sheet of instruction but, it is not very clear. And believe they should be learning how to do the task, as to prepare them for the future.

i type for a living and i hunt and peck... i just took a test online (typingtest.com) and i got 61 wpm with 2 mistakes. i wasn't even warmed up!

i think the first available dedicated typing class when i was in school was 7th grade (i didn't take it obviously)

The way I see things, kids need to have time to be kids! While I also agree they need to be learning, the teacher could make it fun to learn, that way kids stay interested and want to participate. A line from one of my favorite movies kind of sums it up...."I don't want to know a kid who isn't a sillyheart or a dreamer or takes his career as a student too seriously! Now here is a quarter, go downtown & have a rat gnaw that thing off of your face!" Uncle Buck. :D

Not to many that I know of, I think my kids started going thru typing drills in the 4th grade (I think that was when my Oldest and my daughter asked me to buy them meavus beacan teaches typing (same as they were using in class)).
And my youngest still does the hunt and peck no matter how much time he spends practicing.

I agree and this should be pointed out during your discussion with the administration.

Good to hear it is getting done (sorry it is taking up a lot of you and your wifes spare time), Keep us posted on how well the principle actually handles this, or how high up you have to go to get results. This is more than frustrating im sure.

Here is something to consider or maybe explain to your kids (not that it really applys just food for thought)

In school (no matter what level K-12 or higher)
You will have good teachers and bad teachers.
You will have hard teachers and easy teachers.
You will have cool teachers and lame teachers.
If you look for the easy way out you never learn how to deal with a tough challange or a situation.

And we all know life in general is not easy and it is what we make it.

Do not take offense to any of these as it not intended to be offensive.

Not all Unions.

I use to be a Union shop steward, and I even agree on this.
My take on it is the Union is only as good as the people that are in it and run it.

The company I worked at actually wanted a union in place as a third party to over see things, the company and the Union played nice and the employees benefited (even the none union members).

I would sit in on so many bad situations and help work out a mutual resolutions a lot of time avoiding terminations, keeping write ups out files, degrading situations to verbal warnings, you name it.
