Rubicon's mostly manual?

Nope. Aimed squarely at me.
Wow, we are the conceited one today aren't we? Just remember, it's only if the shoe fits. :)
based on your experience of owning rubicons:amy:
Considering how my husband and I have chosen to build our junk instead of buying a ready-made wheeler, you are correct that I have never owned a Rubicon. I have wheeled with quite a few though and have actually driven a couple of trails in a very nicely modified Rubicon. I stand by my original statement. Rubicon's are pretty boy Jeeps, but if everyone were as awesome as some of us, it wouldn't be nearly as much fun. :)

Wait. Maybe she means they're "pretty BOY Jeeps", as opposed to her female "Bronco".

We've been reading this all wrong!

I like Rubicons. If I could get one, I'd get a Rubicon Unlimited w/a 4" lift and some goodies, and wheel the wee out of it, with nice factory reliability, a/c, and mileage! That would be kind of nice.

To me Rubicon=more money than brains. I like my auto and 8-way power seats, but love the reliability of a manual. My Jeep is the only automatic I have ever owned, currently driving it on rebuild number 2.

Given the option, most would buy a rig that was capable right out of the box ($). Your "junk" may be the exception. However, how often do you see built EBs wheeling? Not as often as rubicons.

I did not have the option buying a new rubicon, so I bought my TJ on the cheap. Doesn't make me feel any more special than the next guy.

Now just wait a minute. I think you should amend that to pretty person Jeep, because my daughter has one and she won't drive a pretty boy Jeep.:greg:

I was referring strictly to crawling rocks.... as I would not want an auto in the Ramcharger for what it's intended purpose is.

Are Rubicons "rock-crawlers"? Absolutely not. That is not to say they can't be built to serve as one, but will at what point is it still a "Rubicon" when it has 60's, coil-overs and a completely hacked body. I'll absolutely agree that for a purpose built rock-crawler that the automatic makes the most sense, but beyond that its really a personal preference and for every pro or con you find for one, it could be countered with a pro or con for the other.

If I were to buy a new Rubicon, I would absolutely get the automatic. That way I could focus my attention to the other crap falling apart on the thing rather than shifting :D

Man (and woman), that is a long thread with lots of vemon in the replies, espicially considering very few people even tried to answer the initial question.

I was wondering if anyone would take note of that, I half expected some anti-Toyota brand bashing to follow suit. To be clear, I think the Rubicons are neat rigs and no doubt the best out of the box 4x4 for the US market, kudos to them for a well thought out vehicle!

Well, its just not fair to compare apples and oranges... toyota's generally are much much cheaper to maintain but they cost an arm and a leg... so its a give take.

But I could CLEARLY understand where you are coming from after I have personally owned and maintained 3 jeeps over my brief driving life.

Sticks are good for recreational wheeling, not so much for rockcrawling. It can be done. Redbulltj wheels his 5spd with ease. I will also say that an automatic swap is a mod he has been strongly considering.

Crawl ratio is critical when wheeling in the rocks. You then have to factor in the expense to achieve an acceptable ratio and the parts to keep it together once you do.

Back home, I always used to get stuck behind the guy in a CJ with a stickshift, bad carb and no crawl ratio. He proceeds to stall it 10000000 times trying to climb a small ledge. He finally makes it (I'm astonished that it doesn't break a u-joint), then the starter lets go on the next ledge.

sound familiar?

After wheeling 5 sticks and 5 autos over the last 25 years, my pretty boy 4dr Rubicon will have an auto...though I have considered the 6-speed...briefly.

It's got great gears (for a non-granny tranny): 4.460:1 first gear ratio, 2.610:1 second gear ratio, 1.720:1 third gear ratio, 1.250:1 fourth gear ratio, 1.000:1 fifth gear ratio, 0.840:1 sixth gear ratio and 4.060:1 reverse gear ratio. It would be pretty easy to get used to.

Oh ya, the rental I took on the 100mile White Rim Trail was an auto...loved it.

2 favs: auto in my cherokee, stick in my 454 jeep. Considered an auto in the the jeep...chose against.

First of tara i'm far from pretty boy and i have a rubicon but i am selling it because of that reason. i hate driving something that is out of the box and people judge me as some stupid kid in a new jeep that thinks he's all that. and i am now on my 4th jeep that i'm building now and guess what i went back to a stick i enjoy a stick over an auto any day
