As far as fuel, I have a 20 gal tank and 2 5gal Jerry's. My 304 isn't the best on gas mileage. That amound of fuel should get me close to 300 miles though. Is it gonna be 300 miles from gas station to gas station or should I plan on getting another Jerry can just in case?

It's going to be about 220 miles from gas station to gas station. I recommended planning on 300 just to be safe. I don't think you'll need a third jerry can. I can get about 280 street miles out of a tank, so I'll probably have some spare gas if anyone needs it. Don't plan on using my gas, but I think we'll be ok as long as you have 300 miles worth of gas.

I hate to say it, but I'm going to have to bow out of this trip. :( Looks like a great plan and the weather looks PERFECT for spending some time exploring the Swell.

Instead I'll be heading to Silverton over the weekend, to look at a truck. ;)

Was able to download your google map file and load it on my phone. Just noticed the new Google maps for droid allows you to pre-cache the maps for off line GPS use. Sweet!

I remember a sweet Chevy you passed on one of your snowy trip reports in co.

Yeah, that got me thinking.... if it works out, there will be some kind of build thread. I need a truck for towing, hauling the bikes, etc. One that can do trail duty too, of course.

Don't want to hijack this trip planning... any more that it has been already. ;)

I can't get it to work on my phone ironically. Did you paste the link into Google maps, or did you upload the kmz.file to my maps?

The way I had to do was to login to google maps on my PC and goto "my places". I chose create a new map, then imported your .kmz file and saved it. Then I was able to get on my droid with google maps and choose "layers" and I could then see the newly created map. Once I could see your waypoints I then clicked on a few of them and pre-cached them for offline use.

Any fullsize rigs going? Either that, or I find a place to leave the X and trailer and motor the jeep (for the first time since October).

Or go snowmobiling. But I wanted to do the swell this year and didn't.

Brett (how do I get the map to come up in google maps on my droid?)

Nice job making that map sixstringsteve. It was cool to pre-explore the trip in 3d. There are allot of photos around that are in google maps. You chose the camp sites well :) Can't wait to see it in person. I've never seen that part of Utah before.

Maverick, See my post above and check if that method works for you too..

Just another note on the maps... I did notice the "my maps" layer is not available in the google navigation app. To see the map file you need to actually open "maps" app on the droid.

Excellent instructions R0ckstar. I'm excited to use this feature more.

Ironically, google earth (for android) doesn't support KMZ files. Go figure.

Android fans: check out gaia maps. WELL worth the $10, and you can pre-download your maps so they're with you even when you're out of service. Now I just need to be able to export my KMZ as a gpx file, or get gaja to read KMZ files.

i spelled it wrong. it's actually "gaia gps". Incredible app, and you can choose which map source you want to use. I'm looking into a way to convert kmz --> kml --> gpx for use in gaia.

Yes, we have a dodge 1500 coming along. Hope you can make it.

Looking at the kmz, I'm thinking about dropping the jeep trailer at the service access near Eagle Canyon / Eva Conover and jeeping up to where you guys are camping. Wait, you're going down Thurs? Rats, I'll be in Elko on Thurs night, coming back Friday. Would have to meet you Friday sometime.

Anyone have 2m radio?
