San Rafael Swell trip, Feb 9-12

Whatever will make me want to never leave home without a pie iron.

What are good items to bring for food?

Great question. I'm not the expert here, so I look forward to hearing others' suggestions. Stephen and Joseph usually eat gourmet meals, and I stick to the PB&J. here are some ideas:

breakfast:
- eggs
- bacon
- sausage
- pancakes
- hot cocoa


lunch:
- PB&J
- cold cuts
- lunchables


dinner:
- tacos
- grilled cheese (pie iron)
- hot dogs (roasted on a stick over the fire)
- foil (hobo) dinners


The more prep (slicing, cutting, etc) you can do beforehand, the easier it'll be on the trail.



If you get one of Stephen's Pie Irons you can cook just about anything in there over the fire (no need for a stove). Since it's winter, I expect to have a fire every morning and every night.

Pie Iron recipes:
- pizza
- ham n cheeze
- french toast
- garlic bread

we even usually cook our tinfoil dinners before hand so they are just being warmed up over the fire. That saves a ton of time.

I have plenty of fire wood. I don't have space for it though. If anyone wants to pick some up.

unless the trailer comes along so I can sleep like a wuss in the RTT, then I will have room.

My buddy has the bed of his truck free. I'll come down and pick up the wood one of these evenings.

Eggs, vacon, vausage patties, veggie cold cuts, veggie dogs. It's all good in the hood.

A tire plug kit is also something that comes in very handy out in the sticks...

Which way you guys heading up? Us6 or down through salina and up 70? If you go up 6 and through huntington, stop by bks stop n shop (500 n main) best gas station pizza I've ever had!

And top off your tanks in price. Maverik on maine street is about 30 cents a gallon cheaper than 20 miles down the road in huntington/castle dale...

I'd be interested in trying out a pie iron, they seem to be pretty affordable from what I saw in Stephen's website. Warm food is always nice lol.

I'm really getting excited for this trip. I picked up some warmer clothing last night @ rec outlet. Thanks Davy & wife for all your help selecting the right gear and for hooking me up.

I'll get the detailed plans up by Sunday evening. I've got a few things to button up this weekend before the trip, then I'll upload maps and all that. As it stands, I'm not planning on doing Eagle Canyon this trip due to the rigs coming and the snowy conditions. The weather report looks chilly and sunny, great hiking weather.

Gear is packed up ready to go and I have clearance from the tower. Assuming the weather does'nt go too sideways on us I should be in to win. I'm a hammock sleeper and am used to forest camping so hopefully I can find at least one tree out there and use my roll bar. Pretty much have Steve's item list covered with another 2 extremely important survival items. An acoustic guitar and a nippin bottle for the evening Looking forward to meeting you guys!

Sweet, I was wondering if anyone else was bringing a guitar. I'll bring mine so we can seranade Joseph every night.

Tell me about your hammock set up? Is it a henesy? I've been looking into getting a hammock setup as well, but I have been concerned with staying warm enough in the winter.

The Hammock I currently use is a Grand Trunk Pro. They are the best bang for the buck IMO escpecially if your taller. Got mine for $55 on Amazon. They are cooler at night, but I sleep in my snow suit... Also bring a zero degree to sleep on and a 10 degree to drape over me. It's got a zip bug net and I can easily hang a tarp to my ridgeline if I need to. I've slept down to 23 with np at all.
The Henesy looks nice too, just a little more money but it comes with a nice rain fly. Have you checked out the Clark Hammocks? Those are waay nice, but cost major bucks.
