Hubs dont' make any sense on your truck. You've got hydro assist, you'll be fine. Now cowboy up and 35spl that junk, mmmmkay?

Actually they make a ton of sense, just because I can make the tire point in the direction I want to go doesn't mean that the Blazer is going to go that direction. If I'm on rock or even hard pack dirt with both hubs locked I can turn the tire to full lock and still go mostly straight. It gets a little better if it's in 2wd, but it still won't turn for shite

Not much differentialing in there

I know where you can get a bad a$$ 454 with a fresh rebuild (brand new everything but the block) for $6k. ...You'll have to take the sweet boat that is wrapped around it, though... The guy that bought my boat over a year ago is no selling it again. He had a heartattack last summer after blowing his back out. He said the boat has sat and hasn't even been started since I started it for him on the side of the hwy when we made the exchange. On the way home, one of the straps came undone and beat the bottom of the boat to death, so he had to have the bottom redone for $1500. Here's more info on the boat...

454 Chevy bored 30 over - 460 now 10.5:1 compression 750 HP with about 15 hours total run time on it.

The block is a 4 bolt main truck block
Eagle 4340 forged crank, with large radius journals
7/16" dimple rods w/ ARP bolts
TRW pressure forged pistons
Sealed Power file fit plasma molly rings
Clevite full groove (race) bearings
Ported/blueprinted Melling high volume oil pump and chrome molly drive
oil filter bypass plugged
4310 fluid harmonic balancer
SFI (race) certified flexplate
High capacity aluminum oil pan

Crower cam 274/288 duration and 573/590 lift - 105* lobe center
Crower solid lifters
Crower double valve springs 120/335 lb and titanium keepers
Harland Sharp full roller rockers and guides 1.7 ratio
Crower 3/8" molly push rods

Edelbrock 2x4 high rise manifold
two holley 600 CFM freshly rebuilt carbs
Carter 120 GPH mechanical fuel pump
Braided steel fuel line
Holley fuel regulator
K&N air filters and velocity stacks
brand new Bassett racing headers and exhaust inserts (mufflers)
Mallory magnetic breakerless distributor
Mallory promaster coil
Mallory 6AL ignition box (needs repair and isn't installed in the boat curently. Mallory said they would repair it for $5.)

Ok, so lets make sure we understand each other. I wasn't saying "don't do it", but rather " these are the things that I know will cost money if what you already have isnt good enough, like the fuel pump and Radiator.
Don't put in a 700 r4 behind a 454, that's just begging for breakage. Just because it will bolt up doesn't mean it should!
Maybe you should concider an ox locker then for the front? Getting in and out and in and out and ...... gets really old after the 1st time (to lock and unlock the hub). BUT, if your happy with what you have (spool), then leave it alone.

You know with a cam, set of Vortec heads (maybe), a reburned chip.... you can easily get (stock)BB power with what you got and not have to change ANYTHING else. You said your motor isnt tired, then why not just pump out and extra 50 HP then?
Ok here is the question: What amount of power do you want, and what do you have?

I don't think you can get big block torque out of a small block with the mods you list. See Edelbrock ads, with their hp/torque improvements over stock: those are with their cam, intake, and heads.

Six thousand for a motor is rediculous...

Maybe for a buggie it is, but not for a racer or hot rod.... And depending on how far (and what direction) into the junkyard 454 he is going to go, $6k is easy to meet. 4 bolt main BBC's aren't real common (or at least they weren't when I built this motor in Sacramento), and if you find one, they usually go for a pretty good chunk of change.
