I appreciate it Steve. I'm just glad I could walk the walk after I talked the talk. I would have felt bad if I didn't come through like I said I would. For those of you who haven't seen this truck, it's awesome. I went out there to Steve's with the intention of looking at it and checking it out with a hopeful future purchase....I couldn't let it slip away. Steve told me if I saw it I would buy it. He was right.

I'd say if your Taco can do escalator, that's pretty hard core. I took my LJ a third the way up and couldn't risk it. I'm ready now. So whenever you want to go down, let me know. We've got the condo right there that never gets used. Thanks again for the truck and all the hard work you put into it!!

haha, I won't ever do escalator in the taco again, I just did it to show proof that an ifs rig can do it, and to show how great those tacos are. I had the greatest spotter around, I give him all the credit.

I did have the right wheelbase for escalator though. The taco does extremely well in moab, since most of the trails aren't very tight, and they're steep.

I am so glad it went to someone local who will wheel the snot out of it, and I'll be glad to see it on the trails in the future. Moab is my favorite place to be, so we'll definitely have to plan something.

haha, the one thing I've learned about building that '81 is that when something should only take one night, it takes a month. I'm going to keep the taco ifs for a bit. If i really get the itch to sas it, I'll probably go with trail-gear's leaf or link kit for the tacos (not quite out yet.)

Thanks Sparticus. Hopefully I can go with you Toyota guys more often when you go. I still have my LJ though so I'm trying to start a new breed and bring some equality to the offroad world. I'm kinda like the mutt of rig owners.

So I already have a question on my new truck. I know Steve wasn't selling me a shady truck cause I test drove it for a while and never had the problem. I always seem to have something break right away. I drove it home on the freeway, and I actually stayed up with the flow of traffic. It drove great the whole way home, almost. As I got on the off ramp and put it in neutral and started slowing down, so did the motor. The rpm's died out as I slowed down. So I popped the clutch to get it going again. If I didn't keep my foot on the gas and keep the rpm's up it would cut out. I drove the rest of the way home using all 3 pedals with 2 feet. That's kinda hard coming to lights while slowing down but trying to keep the rpm's up. Luckily, I almost made it the whole way home. I thought it was all better so as I pulled in my driveway I let off the gas and it died.
I tried restarting it but nothing happens. It will crank and crank and crank but nothing will happen. I tried pumping the gas, holding the gas down, and no gas. So I had my trusty LJ pull me down the street a little and I popped the clutch and it started up fine again but I had to stay on the gas. Got it parked, let off the gas and it died again. I tried again today thinking it might have gotten flooded but still nothing. It just cranks. Any Toyota guys have any info or help for me. It's the 22r. Thanks in advance.

First off, steve you crazy man how could you!!! :'( I loved that truck!! ;)

And it sounds like the carb could use some cleaning. Or maybe try turning the idle up? But i would try cleaning the carb.

You now have my look a like truck ( mine is a 80 though w/ a 20r) but I had the exact same issue. Threw a rebuilt carb on it and now it runs amazing. A rebuild kit is only like 25$, and here is a link all about that carb and the adjustments

Congrats on the new (old) Yota Tyson. I love those 1st gen trucks. From everything I've read from Steve it sounds like it's built well. Wonder if it has a little water in the fuel and the cold weather is freezing it. If you don't mind another Jeep along let me know the next time you head to Moab. As soon as the rockers are on I'm ready for a trip.

I just thought it seems weird that it would run great and then die and then not start but it will start fine with popping the clutch.

Bart,I'd love to have you along in Moab. I'll most likely still have my jeep since no one wants it. So you wouldn't be the only jeep. Plus, the only people I know have jeeps anyways. Is your mounting kit in yet for the rockers for me to go pick up? Still waiting for that call or pm from you to let me know.

Supposedly the.previous owner had some carb work done before I bought it. I just topped it off with gas last night, so I doubt its water in the fuel. I do know that the idle is quite a bit higher than stock. I had that issue twice, but it was gone after 20 min or so. I wonder if the carb is loose. It wouldn't hurt to rebuild it. I also wonder if there is a vacuum leak... I'm stumped cuz last time it did that, it went away 10 min later.

First thing i would check is the carb mounting bolts to the manifold, if those are loose at all then it would cause a vaccum leak, next i would make sure the bowl is filling up with fuel and doesnt have a sticky float vavle which could be why it would go away before, and if all that checks out i would clean it very well and get the rebuild kit. Carbs can get dirty really quick or they can run for years with out a issue just depends on the moons aligning, some thing i would add if there isnt one already is a inline fuel filter right before the carb it will help get rid of any crud that migth still be in the lines

Which side of the carb will have the gas in it? If I am looking at the carb from the front is it the left or right side? And do I have to be pumping the gas or do I turn the ignition to make sure there is fuel or what? I don't have much experience with carbs. My last one was on my J20 and I got it rebuilt and it ran great after that.

The gas will fill on drives side of the carb, The fuel is ran by a vacuum pump from the cam so fuel only pumps when the motor is turning over, it is located on the front passenger side of the valve cover.
and seriously this is a sticky on pirate4x4 for your carb it has all the answers your looking for

Check/change the frame mounted fuel filter. It's on the right side of the fuel tank, small little round white donger with a supply and feed line. It takes 30 seconds to change it and is 5 bucks at NAPA.

All the recent wheeling and freeway driving may have stirred up some crud.

My 22R was very sensitive to filter changes, I kept 2 behind the seat and changed them every three months. I had an original, never touched carb and it ran/runs great.

X2 on checking the carb bolts.

Also, the advance/accelerator piston can leak, it is a slide piston located on the bottom of the carb mounted transversly. When you actuate the linkage you will see it move.

Does it die with the airfilter lid removed?

I finally got Angelo started. I let it sit again overnight and now it's warmer. I tried cranking it with no gas first and it started after about 5 times of 10 seconds each. Now it starts first time everytime. But if I give it gas it sounds like it wants to cut out. Too much gas? I let the motor run for about 10 minutes, went out and hit the gas multiple times and it didn't want to stall. I drove it around for about 20 minutes crawling around the empty lot next to mine. The truck wheels like nothing I have every wheeled, crawling wise and belly height wise. I haven't had a chance to flex it yet.
Anyways, after about 15 minutes it cut out again and was tought to get started and would only stay running if my foot was on the gas.

I parked it and now I am back home 2 hours later after I parked it and it fired right up and idled great. I don't get it. Is it just a rebuild that's needed?

Let me know when you have some time to head to Moab. I could go about any weekend between now and the 15th. I called Six States and the kit is not in yet, but I'll let you know when it arrives.

BTW, what's a carb? :rofl::rofl:
