I went in at the river and drive all the way through to the top of blue hill - following hunter as well. I drove it strait through, no winching, no stopping to pile rocks, not really even backing up.

Here's some more pic's for your amusement....

First pic is a trailside repair stop. (edit - sign installation detail) My jeep at that time is the 2 door cherokee closest to the camera. I lead Slaughter Springs 2 years in it. The red CJ is Ber.
Second pic is my first hunting/wheeling/camping rig - had a 400 small block on propane. It loved crankshafts and would break about 1 a year. That drill got old and I traded it for the cherokee in the first pic. I ran my first safari in the blazer - Secrete Spire lead by Earnie Steele. It also had an appitite for transmissions and I had no reverse on the safari.
Third pic is a friend of mines 42 willies (edit - maybe it was a 46 - can't remember for sure)- poo pipe roll cage and all. He lives in LaSalle and don't do much wheeling these days. Our famalies had some great times together.

My cherokee again - the Yellow FSJ belongs to the guy in the willies in the last pic.

Snow wheeling - it got pretty deep in places. We even got a couple of rigs stuck.

I noticed BurgerBurner at the Barn in the very back. I think 86 was my first year there. Also I noticed how Ber's CJ has NOT changed a bit other than some new tires! A few months ago we went out with Ber and I noticed how shiney the underside of his CJ was. Not a sign of grease build up or paint on the tie rods, diff cover, springs, etc. I took a picture of it. I'f I can figure out how to post pics, I'll get it posted this evening.

PS: E. McStiff's Plaza is up for sale I hear. Also, Canyonlands Campground sold last month to the guy who also owns another campground in town and one in CO.

Thanks for sharing guys, I love the old pics and stories. I have two buddies I have been wheeling with for about 15 years. We always practice crafting our stories so they will be real good when the grand kids come along someday. You guys did'nt have those fancy Tru Trac tires back then?

I also enjoyed all the old pics and stories. I have been Wheeling on my dads lap clear back in the early 70s. But my first trip to Moab easter safari was 98. The highly modified 4X4s had already started to appear. I used to love the days when any thing over a 30" tire was big, every one drove to and from the trails in full sheet metal and it was more about drivers and trails then rigs. With that said the bug has bitten me and I can't quit upgrading my rig. I still wheel all the time with a guy running a Geo tracker and 31" treads. Lots of guys will blast him and say he has no right on the trail, then some one else may turn to me and say why is your 4x4 so over built . I think we just need to remember the spirit off the old days and just go wheelin .

How many Jeeps do you know that have unpainted, NO grease build up, NO rust on metal parts like this one. (click on the picture for a close-up) Only Ber Knight! Looking at the previous pictures, it's plain to see that his CJ is unchanged in 20 years! Not to mention he has aged gracefully as well. And then there's Charlotte, bless her heart, very possibly some of the wind beneath his wings for sure.

I've wheeled many miles with Ber - still can't seem to keep up with him. He can definately get a lot of country covered in a day.

Marty do you ever see the Tan Man these days? I've not seen him in a while.

Nothing but a skid plate and some 1" add-a-leafs if I recall correctly...It was one of those campfire bets...made it.
