im sure you could sell your irock without any trouble for a good price. do you take i.o.u.'s???????

IROK's are already gone. This is what started this whole idea of getting everyone's opinions and thoughts. They were gone before I even went to Moab this last Easter. It is starting to look more and more like I will be trying out a set of Pitbulls next. Now, I just need to decide if I am going to go with new wheels or not. Hmmmmmmmmm...............

If it's possible at all, I'd see if you can get some wheels that will let you fit your rig in the trailer rather than changing wheels/tires when you get somewhere. Just my opinion.

Rob, as far as pitbulls go, I would seriously look at maddogs. at EJS we ran with a guy (ozzy) that just bought a set of Maddogs. they were a true 40 inches and worked AWESOME!!!!! Pics and Report here: http://www.planet4x4.net/forums/showthread.php?t=5161&page=3

If I remember correctly they were 1000 bucks shipped to his door. He mounted them, drove from Vegas to Moab, and wheeled the wee out of them.

I mention this because they seemed to run alot narrower that the rockers. I love the Rockers, Don't get me wrong, but the Maddogs were no slouch of a tire. they ruled pritchett!!

I took a look at them and was a little bummed that they were only the 37" versions. With my rear 14 bolt FF I am a little concerned about the lack of diff clearance a 37" tire would offer. I do like your idea about trying to find a wheel and tire that would allow me to just drive into and out of the trailer without changing tires. I am thinking seriously about the trailer that was at the vendor show during the EJS. The one that had the living quarters up front and the back was a flat bed. They even said that they could lift it some to fit my Sally (the dually). This would be the best idea yet. No limits on tire size and no changing tires. Also I could write it off on my taxes every year. Yea!!!

Cannoncrawler, After your thoughts and remarks it has rekindled my curriousity about the Pitbulls. I am going to give them a serious look as not only you but others (CasperCustoms, and ChestonScout) and others have got me to re-thinking my ideas. I always like it when people offer up ideas and are so convinceing. This way when things don't work out I have someone to blame. Just kidding (as far as you know). But, I also need to keep in mind about the local wheeling that is available here in my home area. I just wheel in Moab more often than I do here.

It looks like it will be the Pitbull Rockers that get the nod in the 42". I already have the correct sized wheels and if they work as well as everybody says, well then I should have no issues. I sold my old leaf springs on the beater the other day so I am hoping that sometime next month I will be ordering the front coil-overs to match the rear ones I already have. I also now own a 1977 Ramcharger with the full convertable top. That may be the body that goes back on the frame. I don't know yet. 440 parts will be on the way this week. Simple build, nothing too extreme so I can keep it reliable. 9.37 to 1 pistons, 440 source 84 cc aluminum heads, aluminum intake, (to keep the weight down) and a throttle body injection to top it all off. Doug Thorley headers to open up the exhaust and the same dual 2 1/2" flowmaster exhaust that is on there now. Now, here comes the real question. Can anybody beat the $372.95 price that I currently have a quote on? This is for the 42X15X15 C range.

That's a LOT of sidewall. I normally hate 20" and bigger wheels, but I'd seriously consider those for that big of tire for stability. Just my opinion.

Yeah, but that is what I am running now. When I first built the beater I was running little 36's on the 15X10's. When I stepped up to the 42's I did not want to buy new wheels. I also have found that for the same size tire that the 15" sizes are always cheaper than the other larger sized wheels. I have given some thought to running larger wheels but, I think that the rest of this build is going to eat up some major cash. Motor, tranny, dual X-cases, new coil overs for the front, four-link front and rear, and tires.

Personally, I prefer the lateral stability of a stiffer sidewall. You usually get a stiffer sidewall with the larger wheels. I've also seen the larger sidewalls "wrap" more (think top fuel dragster but on a way lesser scale--I don't think the 440 will be pushing 8-10,000 HP?) and cause issues with wheel hopping. Under the right circumstances the tire "wrap" can be kind of nice, but I've usually seen it the other way around. Broken u-joint straps, joints and other weirdness. Just my observations and why I'd try to run a little larger wheel if I were going to 42" tires. (I first noticed this phenomenon when I went from 32" MTRs, to 33" SSRs, to 35" MTRs on the same 15" wheel. I started watching things at comps and what not and forming my opinion from that.)

I understand why you go with the 15", but IMHO I'd go with a larger diameter wheel. I don't like 20" wheels until about 40" tires or greater. What front axle are you running? That might make it cheaper to just get bigger wheels as well so you don't have to do a bunch of brake/bolt-pattern mods to a 60 or something.

The axles are just about one of a kind. I would almost put money on it. I run a 14 bolt full floater rear with a disk brake kit and a 5 on 5 1/2 bolt pattern. The front is more common, Dana 60 with a 5 on 5 1/2 bolt pattern. I did this so that I would not have to buy new wheels right away. I would really like to be running a 17" wheel but, finding a 17" wheel that is 10 to 12 inches wide is a little harder than finding the 15" wheel in the same widths. I do notice some wheel wrap as you put it and I would also like to have more lateral stability as well. Problem is that I am wanting to get all of this done by next spring and I don't see it happening if I keep spending money on things that I want instead of things that I need. I don't like the looks of any 20" wheel. Also I would like to keep the weight down as much as possible. A 42" tire on a 15" wheel weighs less than a 42" tire on a 17" wheel. All things being equal. I think I am going to do what I can with what I got for now. When it comes time to order tires I may take another look at wheels but, for now I think 15" wheels is it. I know what you are saying and I agree with you 100% but, I am going to have to see what happens with the money situation.
