the winch

i had a winch {warn m-8000}on the front of my zuk before i did the spoa.....

it has been on the front of the zuk for almost 5 years out in the weather 3.5 years here in indiana......it was my first major mod and i think the best.....

but if you get one you will be useing it 9 times out of ten on some one elses rig
but that is ok......what goes around comes around........the last time i used the winch i am pretty sure i wasted the cable i kept on hear these loud popping noises.......the cable was crushing itself from a uneven wrap.....lots of frayed cable now :-\ but it was about 5 years old and used countless times......

You should replace that cable with one-o-them new fangled winch ropes. Impossible to kink, so they tend to last a lot longer than cable, and if you do break it, you can splice it back together withouth paying for a new rope. They're also a lot safer than cable, won't deacpitate anyone when they break. Wire cable scares me now...

Not to hijack this thread but what is the opinion in Milemarker vs. Warn ? Milemarker is alot cheaper and they are using them on the Army's hummers now. Anyone used one yet ?

If I had the money I would have a winch. They are so nice and make you feel safer when going on those lone trips cause your buddies are too lazy to go wheeling.

No question, without a doubt Warn. They are a far superior product, IMO. The Hydro winches are nice because they can winch all day long and not even flinch but they are slow. Also the engine has to be running inorder to winch with the hydro units (which doesn;t seem like a big deal unless you are upside down, stuck ina river, etc). Just because the military uses them doens't mean they are good;)

Agreed. I have only used my winch about 5 times, and 3 of those were without the engine running.

The way I justified my future winch (its now budgeted for May purchase) is to get stuck with the wife in the middle of no where in May when its still cold in the higher mountains. Spend 2 hours digging and stacking rocks. Give up due to darkness/out of ideas. Hike 3 miles straight up a steep canyon wall for cell service. Use a brand new Gps (she hasn't questioned this purchase since) and get coordinates to a buddy to locate you. Hike 6 miles in the dark with no flashlight. Wait 4 hours for buddy find you and winch you out of a situation where if you had winch on your vehicle in the first place you would have been free hours later.

I often explore the mountains alone with wife and friends in my jeep. Yes it is not ideal or probably a good idea but I have been doing it for 11 years. In those 11 years I have been winched to safety 4 times all 4 times I was very grateful. Each time I could have extracted myself if I had the equipment (aka a winch). My point if you have ever been winched out of a spot after being stuck for a while you understand the value.

I plan on getting the warn 9.5ti. I figure do it once and do it right. If something ever happens and I need the money it will be easy to sell.

What about the Milemarker Electric Winches? I saw a 9k pound Milemarker, electric winch for about $600 (I think.) I'd rather pay that than over 1K for a Warn 9K.

Well ya, I mean including Winch Plate, and if you went and got the Ti (or the other one that does the temperature and has the newer looks)

Kinda stretch'n it a bit now, aren't we? Does the Milemarker come with a plate? Seriously, the Milemarker electric 9k is *maybe* comparable to the Warn XD9000. The 9.5ti is so many steps up it's not even a comparison, and still well under $1,000!

You guys have never owned a cheap winch before, have you? I have. It sucked. It was the definition of suck. It was the suckiest bunch of suck that ever did suck. 600 dollars spent on a winch that does not come in a Warn box is 600 dollars too much. In fact, my Ramsey was FREE, and it WASN'T EVEN WORTH THAT!

Nope, never owned a winch... Remember, I'm only 19, only owned 1 car and that's my jeep.

All my brother's have Warn winches. All have the 9k.

Thats why I asked, to get your guy's opinions. Thanks! Looks like I'll be saving up a little longer before I get a winch.

Warn sticker... Hmmmm.... :D

Sheesh, if you're going for cheap, get the Warn M8000............tough to beat the price.

Seriously! I'm hella cheap, so I got a M8000. To my door it was $510-515. I got a winch plate @ NPS for $15. So $530 max and you have something better than a MM and $70 cheaper.
