Tow Rig ?

I was looking at this truck and was wondering what some of all your opinions were.

What I am thinking is buying a truck similar to this one in the picture. It has a 10' bed, Diesel, and is an F-450. What I am thinking is adding a 3' dovetail extension to it and putting my buggy on it. Then I can tow a travel trailer behind it.

Would that much weight be too much?

I think it's an excellent idea, and no, I think the weight situation is fine. A couple years ago I was thinking of taking the bed off my truck and doing the same thing. It would be great to be able to tow a camp trailer then drop it. The only down side would be pulling ramps every time you loaded and unloaded, but that wouldn't be too bad.

I'm wanting a similar truck in crew cab version but haven't checked into the weight capacity I would need for the truck (my "Jeep" is 4500 lbs if I remember right) and the insurance coverage of said truck if something were to happen (accidentish) while hauling the Jeep on the bed and towing our 5K lb. travel trailer. Personally, I'd want something in writing from my insurance agent to validate that I'd informed them of the load and intended usage of the truck and if I had an accident while using it as outlined, I'd be covered under the policy guidelines.

(it's really not that different than hauling some ATVs on the flatbed, but people freak out when you've got a "tow truck")

I also daily drive my pickup and the 450 would be a little much for day-day use IMHO.

See for me it would more or less be an extra vehicle. The wife has the expedition, I have the work van so I dont commute to work since the van is in the garage. the new F-450 have a 3 ton payload in the 2wd so I would still think it could handle the buggy.

I was also looking at this one as the price is much better and it is not the 6.0L

I would probably be good on insurance because mine is just registered OHV. But it would be worth asking. I am leaning towards the 2 one but it has been online for like 35 days so I don't know if he still has it. I plan to call tomorrow.

I hope so, That will mean the price will most likely be more negotiable.

The downside it is in Washington Utah, So its a long way to go get it.

There will be a bunch of RME'ers down there in 2 weeks.

Having an '02 psd, and knowing the issues with the 6.0, I'd be looking for an '00 to '02 as I understand they have more power than the earlier years.

Will a reg cab work for you?

Reg cab is good for me. Just getting started on the whole having kids thing. so I figure it should be good for awhile.

I most likely will be going down in a couple weeks also, but I am impatient and if I decide on it I will be calling Tacoma. :D

My bro in law drives an '00 xcab F350 dually with a flat bed (work truck). If it had a 10' bed instead of 8' it would be perfect for what you are talking about.

That's why I liked the idea of doing that to my truck. It has a crew cab and the 7.3. I just couldn't find anyone to lengthen my chassis to accommodate a 10' bed.

Tesco and Rocky Mountain Wrecker have truck chassis lengthened all the time. I'm not sure if they do it in house or not, but they'd be good places to start.

I would stay away from the v 10 to. Lots of problems and not much power..Wait...you had one didnt you??

The 460 wouldnt be bad. It will tow the weight your asking it to....just slowly. Good price tho

The thing pushing towards the 99 is the 4x4 and I will only be towing my travel trailer that weighs 2800lbs loaded and the buggy on back at a max I would guess 4000lbs so I'm not worried about the v-10 I just wish it had a manual

I bought a 00 V10 about 4 years ago. I seized the motor on the way home from the dealership. They replaced it with a junkyard one that had 20k miles. It ran good for about a month then started having all kind of computer problems. At the end I was getting 6 miles a gallon.......empty. Towing was ubsurd. I ended up trading it for the Powerjoke I have now, which I havent had good luck with either. It needs to go to the shop right now as a matter of fact.

Remind me why I like Fords again???
