TR Beadlocks--on the street---yes or no?

I have a set of 15x8 TR beadlocks. It's a steel wheel with the big TR aluminum ring. 16 bolts or 18--something like that.

My question is, how hard would these be to balance.

How many people have been pulled over for BL's? I would think with all the fake bead locks out there the UHP would have a hard time telling the difference, however the TR rings are so much bigger I'm thinking they would stick out.

so, what would you do? Run theTR's or sell them and pick up a set of MRT's or something similar with 30+ bolts (which seems to be the general consensus for a BL that is going to be run on the street)

FWIW, this is on a Grand Cherokee on 35's that will drive itself too/from Moab, camping, and whatever adventure destination I end up.

Are beadlocks really illegal? As I recall, Rockstomper Scott still has $500 for anyone who can show him chapter and verse illegalizing beadlocks.

That said, I'd run 'em. :D I can't imagine those are going to draw any LESS attention than the huge orange MRW's I've got in the garage.

They are not "illegal" per se, but most tire shops will not balance them, and it says on the inspection manual or whatever that if beadlocks are present, do not pass.

I'm not worried about inspection. I'm worried about balancing and nto getting herrassed. I want to be able to get this rig up to 80-85 mph w/o vibes.

I thought it was cause they are not DOT approved

I have no evidence to back this up that is what I have been told and it sounded good

They can be balanced just fine. Run them, but have a spare set of wheels and tires for inspections and fix it tickets. I don't really think they'll bug you, but a UHP in a bad mood may find you one day. (Don't taze me bro)

Don't taze me bro!!!

This rig already attracts attention with the tires sticking out. I'm getting a new bumper (thanks tyler!) in the next few weeks and that will only expose the rear tires more, but mudflaps can help that even though I swore I would never go down that road.

Has anyone run TR's on the road? Should I mount them myself and then take them for balancing, or find a tire shop that has experience with them and let them do the ring mounting and balancing? I have no problem mounting the ring myself, I just don't know if there is some trick to getting it centered well enough to balance.

make sure that if you post pics of your rigs, with beadlocks, and on the street.. you better block out your liscense plate # or they'll find you... that is an unsafe and irresponsible practice to not block out the number...

put some BB's in to help with the balancing and GO.

Still have yet to see anything definitive on the unlawful nature of them.

I agree. My bro runs airsoft BB's in his and drives it to and from Moab. You know him Cody, big green ZJ (1995zj).

Still have yet to see anything definitive on the unlawful nature of them.

I have fake beadlocks on my rig, and when taking it in for inspection, at first glance they will say "Oh, we can't pass that. It has beadlocks." I then tell them they are not real and they say, "Oh, well, ok. We'll pass it then."

It seems to just be another one of those very clear Utah laws, you know, where you can't pass inspection for something, but then you can run it on the road and it is technically not illegal. Opposite thing with front license plates. The manual says to ADVISE when front plate not present, not FAIL, but cops will pull you over for not having one.

Gotta love those Utah laws that make absolutely no sense.

I ran them for about two years on my rig Cody. Never had any issues with any type of the law. As for balancing, I had them on 35" mtr's and they were with in .5 ounces. I say go for it! Its only a fix it ticket ;)

Mount them with some Equal. If you don't want to use that you shouldn't have trouble finding a place that will balance them for you.

So, should I use BB's or just count on the weights? How do you know how many BB's to put in?

What tire are you going to run? If you're running an enharently unbalanced tire SXs or some big bias ply then the BBs are probably the way to go. I ran TR beadlocks on the road with just balancing weights from a shop. They balance the same as a regular wheel.
