I'm not a UP employee, nor have I been one in the SLC area, so I can't answer most of your questions. I'll tell you this, the benefits are tops, and the retirement is something to look forward to. You'll no longer pay into social security, nor will you ever collect it. I haven't paid into social security in 7 years now. Also my wife will never collect social security. dont feel bad, my app sat in review for 6 months and now it says its expired (never got a rejection, but never got a call either)

I am going to be separating from the military in two months and I want to send in my application but I am in Japan(aka hell) until the time that I do separate. If you can get on a system gang (the posibility of working on the entire UP track) you are paid an additional $1600/mo. BEYOND your salary, for traveling expenses. There's ALOT of system work in SLC right now due to a new intermodal yard that they're building just south of the airport. I believe it will be under construction for 2 yrs, so there's plenty of system jobs in that area.
