Wow that much, then i still have full benifits??

I just mit be working on the rail road.

How much traveling? I really don't want to be traveling overnight and crap like that..

Yeah, you'll get medical off the bat and dental & vision follow a year later.

This all applys to the Track Maint. side of the job. There's not much traveling, unless you choose to travel by going to a system gang. I've been working for 1 1/2 yrs and haven't gone system yet. It's not an easy life, but alot of guys would rather have the $$. Most of the jobs posted are 'district' gangs, meaning you're responsible for a certain section of track. Usually districts are about 100 miles in size, unless you're working out of a rail yard, which is another story... avoid the yards unless you like OT & alot of hard work.

About the pay, so you're not surprised... you start at 90% of full pay. After a year of service you get 95%, then after the 2nd year you get full pay. I'm still not getting full pay and I do alright.


One thing to remember for all who are intrested... once you get on with the railroad, you have so may options/career paths available, it's amazing. Electricians, Heavy Equip. operators, Welders, Fabricators... the list goes on. You can get hired in one trade & transfer to another if you desire.

It's a good job & an even better career.

Tested & Passed? Did they hire you, like, extend an official invitation to work for UP? Train Service, right?

Be patient, it took me 3 months after I got hired, before I went to work. UP is known for taking forever. Do you have a number for the HR department to find out your situation?

I actually I got a call last night, to go to there hireing class next thursday. Don't know what that means for my chances to get the job but will see.

3 things...

#1- Spin a stationary bicycle as many revolutions as you can in 1 minute.

#2- Sit on the floor with your legs straight out and reach past your toes.

#3- Pull a bar up in curl fashion, which is hooked to a scale and measures your strenght.


That's it. They want to make sure you won't kill over or get injured on the job.

i check on the internet under general public app status. it just says i passed the test......... nothin special. everyone i talk to says just to wait, they will call...

i am torn now, i just started a new job at a CNC shop. if i go to the atc for a year, they will bump me up to about 40-50K per year, and i would be home at night.

UP has such good insurance and retirment i almost feel stupid thinking of passing the job up.......

Couldn't have said it better myself. The railroad provides very well for my family and I. My wife is basically a stay-at-home mom, and not only do I work for my retirement, I am also working for my wife's. If you're married and work for and retire from the railroad, not only do you collect railroad retirement, but when you wife retires, she too collects railroad retirement equaling 50% of what you take home. In a nutshell, she'll never collect social security, and railroad retirement will always be greater than what she wuold have collected from social security. HTH!

i know.. thats the killer, thats why i would feel stupid passing this up..... i hate to get a new job and after a month tell them i quit, but i dont think i can pass UP up.

the benefits are basically un matched by anyone else

Well I put in my application again last thursday for a track laborer in Ceder City. Yesterday I get a call to go to the job oriantation at the Hampton Inn in Ceder.

i guess it kinda worked out for the better, i have a great sales job that i enjoy in St George...

the retirement still sounds great but.... oh well.
