So if I take a group of 20 "friends" from RME out to 5MP, and we don't charge money, then we don't need a permit/insurance? Sorry for all the noob questions, I'm still trying to understand all these laws.

I kind of see it as, if YOU yourself "take" a group out, you're on the line of needing a permit, but if you invite all the noobs on RME to join you and other more seasoned friends/wheelers for a day of fun, it's just that...an invite for some fun. If you (we) keep it to an invite on the upcoming trips forum on RME and that's it, there's no problem....it'll be the same as the other thousands of invites in the past. I say we keep it up at hogs hollow and keep it a simple invite for RME noobs to join us if they want...no harm in that! my .02. By the way, I'm looking forward to it and to see how your new beast does!

Most likely not. However your not giving me 100% of the specifics and more importantly I'm not a paid consultant so I'm not going to corner myself into an answer. Hire me to plan an event for you and I'll sleep with my answers :D

From the Utah BLM website:

If you answer yes to any of these questions, you may need a permit from BLM:

* Are you charging a fee?
* Will there be competition?
* Will you advertise?
* Will you mark a course?
* Are you expecting vehicles at the event?
* Will anyone be paid to organize, lead or participate in the activity?
* Will your event involve public land?

Wow all these rules make me miss Alaska already.

Again this is not a Utah thing, this permit process comes from a federal level and a quick search found that the BLM in Alaska has permit stipulations nearly identical to Utahs. As I mentioned earlier some districts may choose differently how to enforce those guidelines but as the RMP's get revised and agendas in Washington DC get pressed on their already stressed budgets, I expect this to become a bigger issue everywhere on public lands before it gets better. While the permits are nothing new, we are just seeing them enforced and imposed more often and in broader areas. They are here to stay.

thanks for the info Kurt.

the current plan is to keep it at Hog Hollow. I'll be chatting with Draper city tomorrow to verify that it's legal.

what if we have a newbie course out at LHM motorsports park... they can advertise it all they want in their jeep dealerships and even sponsor it and we will put it on for them... anyone have an in with someone out there? Once we have a class we could just happen to mention that there is a trail run meet up at XXX or something...this could bring alot of attention to RME and the sport in whole...

I bet the treadlightly group and others would be glad to have a booth out there with info....

that's an option too. They do have an entry fee, which may scare away some noobs, but it's looking like one of the better options out there. I'm glad you want to make it happen GiJohn. I'm starting to get discouraged. BUt it looks like we're on the right path. I'm looking forward to hearing from Draper City tomorrow.

Steve you made the poor guys head explode.

Looks like Steve is just waiting to get some more concrete information on the area from the police.

the trail run will still be happening. I'm just making sure the initial location is 100% legal. If it's not, I have some backup places to wheel.

...anyone have an in with someone out there?...

But of course, I work part-time at the MMP off-road driving school, RME member John W. Runs the off-road park."Get to know you 4x4" programs are already conducted and advertised through the LHM dealer network but there is no reason a private group couldn't rent the off-road course. We discussed this idea here on RME in the past, it never really got much traction party due to my own irons in the fire.

I happen to be a Tread Lightly trainer too and there are a couple other RME'ers that are Master Trainers too. Easily done.

I like where this is headed Kurt. I do see a need to help new members get out on the trail with us, rather than lurking for years and finally getting the courage up to show up to a trail run.

Lets just all show up randomly at the same location and go wheelin!

maybe we need a RME twitter account. As frightening as twitter is to some people, I think it might be a good idea to tweet upcoming wheeling trips a few hours before they happen...

There I go brainstorming again...

No need to be so Simon & Simon about it, just plan a free fun run and go do it, don't sweat the details unless you start getting too complicated.

That is a great idea! I agree with Kurt, it seems that with how close this run will be, it isn't the one that we should start advertising or making into a bigger deal than it needs to be. Some really good ideas for the future are squeaking out of this thread. Do we have an approximate head count for how many people will be on this run?

We should probably start another thread about ideas of how to help new members, rather than keep cluttering up this thread. Anyone want to lead that thread?

No need to be afraid :spork:

Just like all technology, twitter can be used in fruitless ways, but if used right it can actually be a really useful tool. But I do see its advantages. Especially in an emergency situation. Ok, enough off-topic chatter from me.
