Ok, I FINALLY talked to someone who knows if that trail is legal or not.

According to Greg, the guy I talked to at Draper city (or was it Gary?). I think it was Greg. Anyway, he informed me that Zion's Bank owns the land just north of those access roads (lighthouse and hog hollow) in highland and alpine, and that ALL MOTORIZED VEHICLES ARE PROHIBITED there. Even though there isn't a single sign.

I told him that we would be happy to lend a hand to post signs and inform people, and he appreciated it, but their signs require a backhoe, cement foundations, etc. So he appreciated our offer to help, but he said that it was in in-house job. He was very nice, and very helpful. I'm sad to find that that area is off-limits to motorized vehicles (but for some reason it's ok for mtn bikes, hiking, etc), but now I know.

So a HUGE thanks to those who urged me to check, double-check, and triple-check the legality of that wheeling area.

That being said, this noob run is still on, but we will be changing the location.

As it sits, it looks like we have a few choices:

5-mile pass area (West of Lehi, lots of trails out there).
Little moab
or???

If you have any suggestions of some LEGAL dirt roads that can be handled by a stock trooper, tundra, blazer, etc, shoot me a PM so we can pick the perfect location for this trip.

Please don't post trail suggestions in this thread, since it'll most likely confuse the new members reading this thread.

Why does it need to be at night? Noobs can see more in the day.... just sayin.

I go out almost every weekend to Rock Canyon area and there's always the Pony Express trail too.

well, it looks like I'm going to have to get real familiar with that area before March 11th. That or have someone else lead a trail out there. I really want to make sure it's a mellow trail that stock vehicles can do without damage. I know there are TONS out there at 5MP.

I agree... but Not that it matters to me if it is day or night im not new to wheeling and both are fine with me,but just wondering why it is going to be at night? might be a little easier for the "newbies/less experienced" to learn and run during the day. I know if i was new to this i would prefer day just so i could see what im going up or getting in to;) Either way i cant wait!! this will be the first trip out this year for me and i can not wait it is much needed:cool:

This is a very wise decision. We're trying to introduce people to this hobby, not scare them off from it. Simple graded dirt roads ought to work well. I think it would be fantastic if we could find a steep hill or two so people can learn how to properly climb (and, more importantly, how to properly descend) in 4LO. I'd say our best bet is out in the 5MP/Sunshine Canyon area.

BTW: the last time I was out at the main 5MP area (which was in August for the Perseid meteor shower), there was an area with numerous 'no vehicles allowed' signs. These were tiny, mile marker-sized signs. In the photo below, the signs I saw are indicated by the red dots. (The yellow dot is where I parked to watch the meteors, and it is the furthest from the pavement I went that night because of the signs.)

I was rather hoping they were for some temporary reason, though I have no idea. I'd have to head back out there and take another look. Since I live on the west side of Lehi, it wouldn't be terribly difficult for me to get back out there....

I think 5mp is a great idea. Only problem is, I don't know the area other than rattlesnake/constrictor. So I don't know what's legal and what isn't. And I'm afraid I'd get the group lost.

I like the idea of hill climbs/obstacles (which is why I think lil moab would be cool too).

Anyone want to volunteer as a trail leader out there? I don't know enough about the trails to feel confident leading.

cuz I started this thread, and that's what I picked :D

You're welcome to organize another one in the day time.

The reason I do so many night runs is because most people are off work on a friday night at 7 PM. When I plan them on Sat, a lot of my friends can't make it because they work.

None of the trails we're going to be doing are going to be challenging enough to have good visibility beyond headlights.

I was thinking the 5 mile area as well. When I went with sixstringsteve, ricsrx, and others last year, we finished with Rattlesnake and Constrictor. The trail on the way down would be great I thought. We didn't go back down the snakes, it was a different way. I don't know the name of it, but it was mellow, and had a few flexy spots for not so modified vehicles. Then for the kicker at the end, the tailings area that you drive up and through. I always thought that was cool. Just a thought.

yeah, I know that trail forwards and backwards, but that's all I know. Plus we could play up by the mine talings and see the jeep down the mine shaft.

I'm not against 5MP, I just get a little tired of it sometimes since it's the only local place to crawl in the winter other than LM.

well, what's left of one. It's been there for YEARS (like so many years that it's almost all rusted except for the rear axle). I thought I showed you when I took you out there the first time. Hm... must have been another group.

Anyway, that road is my plan unless we find something better. I wouldn't mind exploring new areas, but I don't know enough about the trails out there.

cool, thanks for the link, I somehow missed that story. I'd love to see the video footage and hear the transcript of the story.
