Volkswagen TDI talk

If that's true about buying back at retail and then 5k more then I will let them but back our '15 tdi q5. But we're totally happy with the car. I'd try and talk my wife in to a q7 instead just to have more room for trips. The Jetta looks great!

Well, you may be in luck Tyson! - http://jalopnik.com/volkswagen-migh...ource=jalopnik_facebook&utm_medium=socialflow

And my '09 Jetta with the Common Rail 2.0 has a buy-back payment of over $17k! :freak: - http://jalopnik.com/heres-exactly-how-much-volkswagen-will-pay-you-for-your-1782745097

Obviously, I'll be returning my Jetta, which will be great as it does have some engine issue.... the next question it what to replace it with? I may get another '06-08 TDI Jetta with the BRM TDI engine. It's no CR, but at least it's not under fire for issues.

I have been thinking about getting into something else, I want something midsize or less, good mileage and power with AWD and a turbo. It would be great if I could find something that averaged 30+ MPG with a turbo and AWD, but that seems about impossible. I really want something newer ('09+) with less than 100k miles.

Good luck Greg, my wife was on a kick to replace my TDI, I even test drove a new 1.4L TSI Jetta, man that car was bad, maybe I just have expectations of how cars work but 5th gear going 55 and I push the pedal to the floor and it didn't do anything other than turn on the downshift light. I told my wife I'm better off keeping mine, I kind of want to hit 300k like Rot Box. I'm probably a year away right now.

If I lived in a world where I had a lot more money and driveway space I'd be picking one of these up, http://www.ford.com/cars/focus/trim/rs/ alas I don't live in that world so the 350 hp in a go cart with AWD won't be enjoyed by me.

Though I am super stoked this model finally made it to the US

We will see where I end up, it will be hard to get used to anything that gets less than 45 MPG after owning TDI's for so long! I still do a decent amount of driving for work and at any chance I could go back on the road, traveling all over. I may end up just looking for a '06-08 white TDI Jetta with a manual and leather.... I would be fine with that.

I rode in a friends newer 2014(?) GLI with a 1.8 Turbo and the DSG automatic transmission.... it had a Stage 3 tune, 3" exhaust and was silly-quick! Sounded great, too.

I don't want to spend more than $8-9k at the most, less than 100k miles would be nice.

I have the space, but not the funds! I wish I could swing a car like that.... and the price tag!

Since I moved out of farmville and into the suburbs my fuel milage has dropped quite a bit even though my commute is much shorter and at lower speeds. I was getting 700+ miles to a tank and now I barely hit 600.. (oh boo-hoo I know lol) My OCD kicked in and I decided to pull the EGR and intake manifold again and have a peek. Holy smokes it was pretty dang gummed up for having just cleaned it a year or so ago! While I was into it I moved the turbo linkage by hand and while it did move it did not move freely or easily so I cleaned/lubed that up. The car runs noticeably better now maybe the mileage will come back a little.

That said I went 40 days on one tank going to work and back daily and random errands here and there........... so I really can't complain :greg:

Oh and this happens sometimes..

I'm sure there is but I haven't looked. I just started pulling stuff off until it was sitting on the work bench. I've done it twice now and it's really easy the second time around. The EGR cooler unbolts and hangs out of the way so you don't have to drain coolant or anything. I'd recommend cutting down a 6mm allen to make it shorter--some bolts are kinda hard to get to. A 6mm hex bit on a 1/4" ratchet would probably work really well also.

Oh and the anti-shutter valve on the EGR valve (black diaphragm) make sure to cut the rubber hose off with a razor knife---don't try to pull it off. If you pull it off chances are you'll break the end off the diaphragm. I did the the first time and the replacement wasn't cheap. Hope this helps,

If you don't want to DIY, I think the dealer offers an exchange setup to sell you a clean one - you give them a plugged core.

This would probably be well worth it. I end up wearing that crap from head to toe and cover every inch of my work space in carbon goo. It really makes a mess :ugh:

I have been noticing that my car is kind of sluggish when I first take off.....like the turbo is not spooling up or there is some other type of restriction. Do you thing this is due the intake and egr being dirty?

The biggest surprise was the birds nest of junk plugging the intake inside of the fender. Elf says there is a super-fine screen in there only on the TDI models, so it is pretty common. Hopefully I'm ready for another 275k miles now...

I'd check the air box intake snorkel first. Mine didn't have a screen in it but Unimog's did... yikes!:ugh:

Could be the intake manifold/egr valve if it hasn't been cleaned in awhile. I dunno if it's my OCD or what but I'm planning on cleaning mine at least once every two years or sooner. Also it's kind of a pain to reach but move the linkage on the turbo (I push on it with a screwdriver) to make sure the vanes aren't sticking. I few drops of oil does wonders on mine.

Next Friday I'll be digging into mine.

Oil change,

Full fluid check,

Fuel filter,

See how dirty the intake is and clean it if needed,

Remove insulation,

Sand and clear headlights,

Hopefully get a stock grill and put it on,

hopefully be able to adjust my reverse linkage (it grinds/clunks into reverse sometimes)

Replace the front and rear brakes pads,

Paint and scratch repair.20160822_230905.jpg

Anyone replace there vacuum pump/fuel pump?

Car has a hard time starting when it's cold outside but not cold enough to turn the glow plugs on.

have noticed there is a bit of grease on top of the transmission and on the side of the motor and found a pool of fluid that is a mix of coolant and diesel.

Turns out my injection pump is leaking and is very common and there was even a recall in 05 for certain production VIN numbers.. (mine meats all the specified criteria apart from the vin)

They first started putting the Luk on and now are selling a bosch pump..
If it's the gasket between the head and pump it can be replaced but anything else, the hole unit needs replaced $250+

I can see the gasket for the return fuel check valve is weeping..can't see where the main leak is currently..

Can't buy a rebuild kit unless your in Europe either..

So can't decide what direction to take... try and make my own gaskets or just buy a new pump..

I get the dummy light on my dash every time I start mine regardless of temp unless it has only been shut off for a very short amount of time and there is still a decent amount of heat int he motor.

From what I have read is they won't turn on unless the coolant temp sensor reads around 35 degrees or lower.

I researched this because my light would only turn on for a second or so and then turn off and thought it wasn't normal.

I guess there was a recall on the glow plugs awile back also but alot didn't get switched at the dealerships.

Ah. The only time I've had any start problem was if the glow plugs weren't working correctly or the engine wasn't cranking fast enough. Lots of root causes for each of these.

It fires right up if it's warm outside..wondering if the cold temperatures are shrinking the seals allowing the fuel to drain out of the pump??

Seems like the glow plug system is way way overly complicated and rarely works..

Pulled mine out and there the good ones and look good.

Think I found the leak.
Looks to be leaking from the plate..or possibly from the back gasket.. seams to also have a leak around that hose..

Also weeping here.
