Volkswagen TDI talk

Thought I would report on the demise of my old 2002 TDI Jetta. I bought it new in 2001 and sold it to my son about 8 years ago with 275k on the clock. He drove it for around 8 years and was hoping to get 500k out of it. The other day, he was returning from work, lost a bunch of power and figured he had lost a turbo. It got much much worse and opening up the turbo intake exposed severe damage from engine parts letting go into the turbo. He figured a pistons disintegrated. He limped it into a salvage place barely running with 395k on the clock and sold it for $300. RIP.

Bought a BHW Passat at auction. Balance shaft chain is failing and noisy, but hasn’t completely gone out, still has oil pressure.

Anybody interested in TDI swapping something? My wife isn’t happy that I brought this home, so either I pull it and delete the balance shaft and keep to swap into something later, or just sell it as is. Seems to run good besides the chain starting to go out.

Sooo I guess I now have joined the club, we were looking for an inexpensive car for my oldest daughter and we’re hitting dead ends with lots of junkers out there. With perfect timing my freind at work had just purchased a new to him Subaru and asked me if I want to buy his 2000 Jetta Tdi. With a lot of hesitation ( because I was worried the previous owner who is a member here wanted to buy it back and would never forgive me because he loved this thing more than anything) we decided to go drive it. My daughter put up a fight on learning to drive a manual. But now she is excited and is loving the car. Anyone recognize this clean car?

Looks good!

Good TB and water pump history?

its still a young one, only 346000 miles.

A testament to the ALH and good maintenance! 😉 Does it still have the glass headlight lenses? Looks like the light housings were replaced.

That leather bra is looking rough... 😂

I drove that car all over the country, from SoCal to Chicago... I was putting some serious miles on it. Used to drive it 1,200+ once a week when I was driving it to Chicago and back.

Yes I do have the original lenses, they came with it all boxed up in case we wanted to switch back, it also has pretty new tires and rims as well as a full set of studded snow tires on the original rims and included hubcaps. Lots of vw tools, tow oil filters and enough rotella T6 for two oil changes, it was too good of a deal not to buy it.

Stock lenses are plastic, I had glass lenses that I bought but don't think I put them on yet.

My son is looking at a 2012 TDI jetta with 178k on it. Timing belt and water pump was reportedly done at 165k. Were there any issues with the 2.0 that he should consider?

CP4 failure and DPF issues seem to be somewhat common. If you run a good additive regularly and change fuel filters regularly, it'll help remedy it, but not completely eliminate the possibility. I've looked at buying one recently, the only way I would, is with the intent to do a CP3 swap.
