In some cultures it is perfectly acceptable to pay homage to a gravesite by leaving something of value, be it intrinisc or actual. In this case... you'll have to wait and see ;)

If by "in this case..." you mean people think that leaving their trash on the trail is acceptable, then I understand.

The term "trash" is very relative in this situation. I would hardly consider coins, cash or momento's of sorts "trash". Even broken auto-parts can be neat in some situations (think Rubicon Springs for example). Do you consider geo-cache's trash? I personally don't... Trash to me is cups, cans, bottles, wrappers, paper, etc... not money ;)

To me it's the 'context' of the item being left. Someone tossing a banana peel on the ground to me is trash, to others it isn't because its organic or whatever. The last time I was up near the crack, someone had made some 'monuments' with some axle/suspension parts. While it was cool looking, it was trash to me. I kind of think the same of this gravesite, if it is such a thing. While I can understand why people would do it (in their mind, not littering), that is still my opinion. To me it its an eye sore and possibly another nail in the off roading coffin.

I'm on the case...

I'll likely be writing an article on this for the Compass as it seems to have sparked alot of interst. Thusfar I have been in contact with the Dan O'Laurie Museum in Moab, the Moab Visitors Center, the Moab Times-Independent as well as the Moab BLM office. The Moab Times archives all of their newspapers at the U of U, so I might need to pay a visit there. The Moab Times started regular paper service in 1896, so an obituary or even a story might have been published.

If anyone knows any "credible" info on this story, please don't post it... PM or email it to me... I want to make a story of this :D I'll post the store here too!

Good job Kurt. I will be waiting to read the story in the Compass. I was just sad to see something trashed like that. It just makes us (anyone who offroads) look trashy.

I wish I had the time to make the calls you did Kurt. I knew there was a reason we keep you around.

Forget Gephart It is now get Kurt Williams

A quick search online shows that the mountain biking community is more responsible for the items left at this grave site. I wonder how long it has been there.

The grave site has been there since the mid to late 70's, until about 5 years or so ago it had a series of wooden crosses put up on it. There is no Mary Jane Francis, the grave is empty. There had to be some reason to name it Poison Spider Mesa and this "grave" is the reason. I've been wheeling around here for more than 40 years and don't know a single person who has even seen any kind of "Poison Spider" up there.

The only poison spider that would have existed in the late 19th century would've been the black widow, it would've taken a lot of bites from one of them to kill even a small sickly kid. And who would try to homestead that area?

Someone mentioned the grave site near Lion's Back, it is real. There is no body in it but what was left of the guy was found there a couple of days after he failed to return to his camp. He fell off the back of Lion's Back, in the dark.

Thats another variation of the story... everyone is a bit different, I'll divulge them all in my article :D

What did this gravesite look like in the 70's? I've got mixed reports that it had a cross, others say it didn't have a cross until the 90's... I'd love to hear more of the story ;)

Again though... if you have a real peice of the story, please PM it too me rather than spoil the surprise ;)
