    New to SLC

Welcome, man. I'm in Layton too. Not a bad place, really. :D

General Tech What did you work on Today?

A few friends and I played Santa's helpers over the weekend, replaced the water pump and thermostat on a ZJ for a lady. Mounting medical bills warranted the sale of the vehicle to make rent, so a running ZJ is better than one that was gushing coolant. Able to cover both parts with our AutoZone...

Thoughts on 2002-2004 WJ... Will most likely (and hopefully shortly) be my new rig

Nice, I've seen similar, not a bad design. I should probably get a wj before the rims... or is that just more initiative to buy a wj? Haha. I remember reading that story (from the above picture), cool stuff. Poor Toyota. ;)

You're right, I don't plan to go bigger than 32s. This isn't a mud-bogging truck on 40s... Though if I end up with a limited (hopefully Overland) trim, I'll have 17" rims, and replacing those won't be in the budget for a while.

QD has 4full, neutral, and 4lo 50/50 lock. SelecTrak (242) has 2hi, 4full, 4hi 50/50, neutral, and 4lo 50/50. Not better or worse, just more options. You swap in the 242, and retain the limited slips - best of both worlds. I'm actually trying to find an 02-04 Overland. Good to hear...

Yeah, I've seen/test driven both. I'm torn, honestly. I like that on the QuadraDrive you have a front limited... Almost makes me want to get one for that, then swap in an rear open axle down the road. And the 242 case (with the 2wd setting) can be swapped into a QD model, nearly plug and play.

Any wj with the QuadraDrive system has standard front/rear Vari-Lok.

They (Vari-Lok gerotor limited slips) were available on models with the Dana44HD axle, rear only as a standalone option, or front/rear standard on Overland models.

The wife has granted me "no questions" buying power for $3k and under. More than that will take convincing. And by convincing I mean pleading/begging. Ideally, I sell Trooper then get WJ, but WJ first is fine too. No loan involved... Mods will follow, obviously, but that's an "over time"...

See, this has been more what I was thinking going into looking for one, as friends/family have had good experiences, other than regulators and small stuff. I know that horror stories abound, and each is different.... I love LCs, but they're WAAAAY out of my price range.

Not blaming the police, I have the utmost respect for them. Just pointing out the glaring crazy that is the inability to do anything.

"The police are investigating this person but don't yet have probable cause to make an arrest." Lame. Awesome that he found his car.

Newtown victims are going to sue bushmaster....

I find this wrong on so many levels. It's sad that other cases similar to this actually found traction and had payouts. Yes, it is horrible and tragic, but as was stated in all your comments, ultimately it is not the fault if the manufacturer or retailer. The blame can be placed entirely...

3 days in Moab trip report

Awesome. This is the trip we should have planned with our families a few weeks back, instead of the wheeling-focused one that didn't go as we thought it would... Great pictures.

Yeah... I don't have the skills to do the swap for engine/axle. The hope was to get into something for a little cash, and do a slow build on a solid foundation. Though, I might have unrealistic expectations. I picked up Trooper for $800, and over the course of the 4 years I've had it...

Super sad. Reminder that our favorite pastime is one that takes care/attention all the times. Thoughts go out to the family.
