Looking for a 3/4 ton hauler

You say you want a 3/4 ton rig to haul your crawler to Moab? You say you want it to be durable? You say you want it to have a comfortable ride? You say you want it to not mind if it sits for weeks at a time without being used? You say you want to avoid the added expense of a diesel engine...

    ISO 454

:( I don't currently have a lead on a replacement engine for you, Brett, but I'm definitely in for the autopsy results.

    Turbo Setup

His next-to-last picture shows the turbo to be oil-cooled only: Anyone else considering the use of this turbo ought to be asking questions like what are the trims of the turbine and compressor? Or maybe you at least know the measurements of each inducer and exducer so we can find/calculate...

soup can or paint can heaters--anyone ever used one for cooking?

That's what concerned me. They make it look so easy in that video, but there is a big difference between the "controlled" conditions of your kitchen counter verses camping out somewhere.

soup can or paint can heaters--anyone ever used one for cooking?

This video (which is not new) is making the rounds on Facebook: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ay7hc1juJEo These things look pretty neat given how simple they are. At the 2:00 mark, he even shows how you might use one of these to cook something in a skillet. That got me thinking: this...

BFG KO2 vs OEM Dunlop MPG

Okay, I guess I'll be the one to say it: either your calculations are way off, or else there are other forces at work here. There is no way on God's green earth that simply swapping from tire A to tire B in the same size will cut your observed fuel economy by 35%. Hell, you could fill the...

Northern Utah Christmas Eve (Wednesday) day run?

:( My co-worker's brother has a showroom stock TJ. I'll have to see if he can talk him into coming along.

Northern Utah Christmas Eve (Wednesday) day run?

I know this is short notice, but a neighbor just asked me if we might go Jeeping tomorrow since he and I are both off work. He has no rig, so he'd be my passenger... which means I'd want somebody else to be there with us. Any takers?

New to the region, and fairly new to wheeling

Welcome to the group, Daniel! I'm glad you found RME, because it's the best "non-denominational" 4WD site for anyone in Utah. ;) And don't worry--we'll get you falling in love with the rocks soon enough.

Do you ever wonder what happened to your old 4x4's?

Jeep-wise, the only one I've cared/wondered about was my first Wrangler, the 2001 Amber Fire Sport I factory ordered. Since selling it, I have on two occasions run a title report on its VIN just to get an idea of where it might be located. Once I even looked up the current owner in Chrysler's...

    Experience with Lasik?

x5. I also feel this was the best thing I've ever done. My only regret was not doing it sooner. It's been about 6 1/2 years since my procedure. I decided my vision wasn't something to be shopped around to the lowest bidder. I ignored the cost and instead went for the highest overall...

    GM 8.1 owners???

In general, I'd say this is the best course of action but with one twist: make sure your winner has the 4.10 axle ratio (look for code sticker in glove box) as well as the factory HD tow package (look for a trans fluid temp gauge).

    GM 8.1 owners???

As I said above, mine has 226,000 miles and runs great. Yes, you should look it over carefully and check for evidence of maintenance... but high miles should not scare you away. This is a rugged, over-built engine which was designed to run at a steady 4000 rpm for days on end (according to my...

    GM 8.1 owners???

I always leave the trans in Drive and I engage tow/haul mode. Well, I do sometimes manually downshift when coming down long, steep hills. When towing uphill, I always let the transmission do its own thing. I always figured the extra cog in the Allison would result in at least equal fuel...

    GM 8.1 owners???

Oh, hai! 8.1L Suburban checking in: I absolutely, completely love this vehicle for towing my Jeep. As pictured, my load is right at 6000 pounds. When towing this load, I get +/- 10.5 mpg depending on my exact road speed. If I stick to 65 MPH, I will get 11 mpg while towing. If I step it...

    Snakes Run: Black Friday 2014

That's the spirit! (I was happy you let me talk you into giving it a go, even if you didn't make it up.) Glad to see your family had a good time.
