I've installed worse fitting U bolts. Spread them so they drop on, them use a clamp to narrow them to fit the axle plate.

What Greg said, or just use a couple of jack handles as cheater bars to spread them. I don't think I've ever bought a new set of U bolts and had them drop right in, they always need some tweaking. Rather than do all that running around crap, if you can't get the new ones on I'd stick the old...

At a bare minimum, you'll need a set of main and rod bearings, at least one new connecting rod, a crank grind, new oil pump, and a complete gasket set. That'll get you back to your 160k original engine. I'd be all over that used engine, it's a no brainer if it'll work.

One was Lewis, he got his degree and is out of that now. I don't think he's been on in years though.
