    Hotels in Moab...

We like the River Canyon Lodge. It's not the cheapest, but it is close to town in case some of the family doesn't want to trail ride, really nice pool for the kids, reasonable price, huge parking lot for rigs, always treated well. Ask for the AAA discount.

    Loading software CD's onto hardrive??

If you want to mount an image, Microsoft has a utility that works with Windows to do that. See http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4402.html

    Destiny Found!

I suppose if the police and other government officials never abused their power and never made mistaken accusations or arrests, I would be willing to give them unfettered access to my home and property. Unfortunately, that is not the world we live in.

    Destiny Found!

I hate to see a result like this, but without the work of the fine police officers involved, it would have been much longer to find out what happened. I applaud the SLC police department and all the crap they take when some deviant does something like this.

    Grunt/Runt

Well, I'd say if they were having troubles, it probably wasn't because of the body :D . I like the looks of these myself. The rest of the chassis is up to whoever builds it, so as mild or wild as you like it.

    Unimog or Volvo Axles

Daniel, the Killer Axles guy, moved away a year or two ago and sold his inventory to Rob Pickering of Colorado Unimogs. I can get you his contact info if you are interested. I'm intimately familiar with the 406/416 axles and somewhat familiar with the 404 axles if you have any questions...

    Teach britney #1....Which rig?

Well, I'd have to disagree with that kind of statement. Pretty much any bone stock Unimog is trailworthy. Of course there are compromises you have to live with, but every vehicle has those regardless of how 'ultimate' you may think it is....

    pipe vs. tube

For a good strength comparison of Pipe, HREW, DOM, and Chromoly, see the February (I think) issue of Peterson's 4 Wheel and Off road. There is a good article about 'tubing basics' that describes the differences as well as relative strengths, including some crude strength tests.

    Best steak in town!

Flemmings is pretty good. So is Christophers downtown. IMO the best steak in Utah is at Spencers in the Hilton. Get their special bone-in Ribeye. I think it's not on the menu. They serve the big family style sides also.

    Six States. anyone have problems??

I've had two different semi truck drivelines built by them. Each one was just as I specified - no problems at all.

what are you guys using for a park brake??

My thoughts exactly. The Mog's rear calipers have the parking brake integrated. It is self adjusting and will easily hold on any incline. The rear tires will slide before the brake slips. This is for a 2 ton truck and it is manually cable operated. It's hard to believe that someone doesn't...

    4WD shop thought

What about a fab shop that had it's own business, but rented the space out for night/weekends work by owner/fabricators? There could be a no-compete clause so you weren't doing work for hire. Seems like the shop would gain goodwill and some work from things people didn't/couldn't finish in...

    Moab Newb Question

I have used his waypoints on 10 or 20 of the trails from the book without many troubles. Like indicated, they are within about 100 feet. I'm pretty sure they were made before selective availability was turned off - at least in the issue I have. BTW, I posted all these points electronically...

Would a person need a CDL to drive this?

I dont think it's quite that cut and dried. From page 7 of the of the current Utah CDL manual: "The following are exempt from the CDL requirements: * Recreational Vehicles used solely as a family/personal conveyance for recreational purposes * Military use... [snip] * Farm...

    GPS Mapping Software

OK. So I'm shopping for a new GPS. I have a little eTrex now that has worked ok, but no mapping. Which brands/models, if any, can you import USGS maps into? Basically, what is the best setup for using off road. I have National Geographic Topo and that is fun at home, but I don't want a...

    700R4 Transmission; 2wd to 4wd

Like has been stated, you don't need the special tools. Just good circlip pliers and keep the order of everything straight. I changed the output in a 700R4 from 2WD to 4WD about 15 years ago. I picked up the output shaft from Tourist Auto in SLC. You can probably find them everywhere...
