What tires work best for rockcrawling/ mountain trails?

If you can't argue over tires, what can your argue about?

What tires work best for rockcrawling/ mountain trails?

Take it you are not going to be on snow or ice much? If you are, then I suggest avoiding mud type patterns. The hard, smooth surfaces of them doesn't grip ice worth a darn.

    Tamarisk

The insect release does carry risk. Any "non-native" release can cause problems. But at the same time with or with out human help, species move and migrate. 100 years ago moose and mountain goats, along with wild turkey, pheasants etc where not native to Utah.

What year rig to you wheel?

Agree completely with that. My 48 chevy and 78 subaru where easy to work on. Not so now with all the computers and technical junk. It is also scarry to realize that vehicles built when I was in high school are now classics to many.

    Built Rig

Certainly a topic that will never be clearly defined. Need a list of mods done and see if it fits the needs of the user/buyer. Same with the "moab ready" you see used so much. What trails are they ready for? I would think, however, the term "built" can be used with less-than extreme mods...

What year rig to you wheel?

The "budget" or "beater" rig comments in my other thread got me thinking and wondering what years rigs most of us use for wheeling. If you have multiple vehicles, mark all that apply. Not after comments or a debate.....just thought this would be interesting to know.

Sway bar? Good question. Will have to take a closer look back there. I am searching for rear ends w/ e-locker. Hopefully can find one at a reasonable price. I agree that plus the lift is the way to go. I have a 4 speed automatic with the 3.5l engine. I appreciate all the...

It will be interesting to see just what condition it is in come summer.

    Windshield inspection???

It used to be that you could have no damage what so ever (even a repaired rock chip) in an area directly in front of the driver, roughly the size of a diner plate. On the rest of the windshield there was a limit, perhaps the 24" mentioned?, on total other cracks. I have not worked in a shop...

    How best to use $2,000

Good point. Always smart to be able to do some on the trail repairs. I have done a fair ammount of work back 15 or so years ago (engine swaps in both an old chevy PU and a Subaru Brat, plus alot of other work to the Brat-cv joints, wiring, tranny work etc). Hopefully some of that will...

    How best to use $2,000

I'm not stupid. I know that any vehicle takes work and maintaince. But the older they are the more they are likely to take. And if the family could fit in a rubicon, that would make a nice option, but is not an option.

Probably about right. Would love to able to hit Poision Spider, Hells Revenge and similar, but not ready to hit the 5s. With current set up managed Kane Creek with only minor hiccups. Have pretty good under belly protection, but could use some improvement I am sure. So the lift with either...

    How best to use $2,000

Can't argue that at all. No question that this is much more complicated and thus expensive than putting another XJ on the trail. For those who wheel a rig that could be had (with basic mods to have it trail ready, not the 5+ trails, but not a stock rig) for $2k, I have a question: What...

    How best to use $2,000

Only hesitation with that plan is making sure I get something reliable. Don't want soemthing that is going to break down on the trail or nickle and dime with repairs (esp for those of us who are not too inclined to spend my free time doing repairs). On the solid axle swap, toyota axle wont...
