I am interested in doing the Hole in the Rock trail. Has anyone done this trail? I have heard things about it, like its a 4+ and takes a couple of days to do it. Any info would be great.

Thanks

There are two sides of the Hole in the Rock trail. The west side starting near Escalante and the east side starting near Halls Crossing. They used to be one trail, but that was when it was used by wagons and long before Lake Powell.

You are probably thinking about the east side. It is a fun trail, but pretty rocky. The trail starts 11 miles east of Halls Crossing right at a small airport called Cal Black Memorial Airport. I wouldn't call the trail a 4+, maybe a 3.5 or 4. The trail can be completed in 1 day if you haul a$$, but 2 days is better. The trail on the west side is easier. Most of the west side is usually graded.

The last time I did it, it was just 2 vehicles so we made good time. We left Utah County at 6 am and drove to the airport. Started the trail about 12:30 and made it to the end about 5pm. We turned around and started back around 6pm. We stopped to camp on the trail about 7:30pm. The next morning we finished the trail, stopped at Halls Crossing for gas and then drove to Arch Canyon. We drove to the end of Arch canyon and camped and the next morning drove out of Arch canyon and drove the Hotel Rock trail in and back out. We finished with enough time to make it back home if we had wanted, but we spent the night in Moab, just for fun. Made for a great trip, my wife even really liked it and previously she had vowed to never tent camp again.

We did this trip in the spring. I wouldn't recommend it during the summer, it was hot enough during the spring.

I did Hole in the Rock Trail with the RR4W"s diring EJS. WE spent 2 days
because there was about 15 rigs. But it is fun trail.

Great album...looks like a fun trip.

What would say are minimum vehicle needs to make the treck (assuming- right or wrong -a reasonably smart driver)?

I can vouch for taking a moderate built, comfortable rig on 31's, keeping to the interesting lines for the most part and really enjoying the trail, so something along those lines as a minimum for doing everything out there though you could get by with less. The key is reliability and preparedness, the remoteness factor is awesome.

Would be another trail I would love to do. Just need the time I guess (or make the time.)

Sounds like I would probably be OK vehicle wise- have an 03 Montero Sport with 32" BFG All-Terrians, otherwise stock.

Just need the time and someone who knows the area.

If I had enough time just think- Hanksville and the Henry's, cross Powell on the ferry (stop for a swim first of course) then Hole-in-the Rock trail and home.

That would be fun.

Consider going with the Red Rock 4 Wheelers over Laborday weekend. It is a great trip. This is the first year in quite a while we can’t make the Laborday campout. Linda and I have been officials on the Hole in the Rock Trail many times and we keep going back.
Check this: http://www.rr4w.com/LaborDayCampOut/
There is still time to sign up. Even though it is only a 4 rated trail I would not go alone because of the remoteness.

Bringing this back from the past.......so what else do the rest of you have to say about this trail and who has done it?

EDIT Can anyone confirm positively if the road down to the Rincon is closed or not? I'd like to do some swimming when I run this

Brett, when are you going? I want to get down there this fall...

Any reason it couldn't be run in say November? December? January?

Cody and I are planning late september, early october. Then, if we can get to the lake, we can do some swimming too.

I've done it several years back.
I thought it was a very fun trail, and would definitely go again.
A YJ with 31's and no lockers made it through in our group, but it does pose enough of a challenge to make it interesting. The scenery is great. I agree with Todd. It would be good to run the trail with the rr4w's, and definitely not a trail I'd run alone. Have a great trip. :D

Seems like last time I was there, we went down to the lake on the Rincon trail. I think a ranger that pulled up in a boat told someone in our group that it was closed, but since there was no sign, he wouldn't do anything about it. Its been a couple years, so take it for what its worth.

Taking the ferry across from bullfrog to halls saves time if you plan it right.

Will do :greg:

Lets plan it, a couple months in advance so we can all make arrangements to go. You could even be the official cook too  Mabey Bryson can call it his honeymoon..

Olly might have a worthy rig by then too...
