Labor Day Weekend Camping Trip to the Uintas

I've been doing some research and I think making it to Blue Lake should be the goal. According to the maps there is a "high clearance/4WD" road that heads to it. So that should eliminate some of the Subaru campers. I've updated the main post.

Still plenty of time for people to decide to come!

I'm ashamed to admit it, but I've never been up to the Uintahs. Are the lakes warm enough to swim in?

All depends what you consider warm. ;)

It has been a very long time since I've been up there, and when i was a kid we did not swim in the lakes. That said, people frequently canoe in many of the lakes, so I guess that you could say it is "warm enough" to swim.

The elevation of Blue Lake may make for a chilly time in the water, though.

But seriously, I've no problem with children. My three Godsons are my world.

The lake may have prehistoric piranah though.

I had a dream last night that I was at a party by a lake with people I didn't know. The strange thing was my friend who died in 2008 was there.

i was back packing on the west side at about 10000 ft at the beginning of august and the lakes i was swimming in i thought were rather comfortable for the elevation. i'd think with an extra 3-4weeks of sun on them they'd be even better. like they said it all depends on what is cold to you

Stephen, I am 99.9% sure you cannot drive anywhere near blue lake, the one your map leads to I know you cannot drive near. The closest road would be MLH and its a couple strenuous hiking miles away. I lived up there for the better part of 20 years and have been down every dirt road that exists I bet. Double check your beta, I think your misinformed.

The nicest and least traveled to lakes you can drive to are Murdock basin lakes and once you make the split above the tunnel trail the road is not Subaru friendly, It is 100% high clearance, I did not NEED 4x4 but did take advantage of low range most of the way above the split because of the rocky conditions of the road. You can normally find a great spot at any of the half dozen lakes along the higher section of that road even on the busiest weekends.

Just my .02 based on 20 years of travel in that area.

I lived up in kamas/park city area for almost 20 years, My wife is from there. I have swam in the unita's a few times, and remembered as soon as I got in why it had been so long since I swam there last. I don't think you will enjoy much swimming FWIW, there was still a fair amount of snow above echo/pyramid lake this last weekend. The lakes there are amazing, Steve I am surprised you have never been! I am excited for you, the uinta's are the crown jewel of Utah mountains.

I'm surprised I haven't been either. Between scouts, hiking, wheeling, and my wife and I trying to find a new spot to camp every month you'd think i'd have been up there yet. we are really looking forward to it. We've heard lots about it, I just always found a place down south to distract me from it.

Thanks for the input. And yes, that was the wrong Blue Lake. Apparently there are three Blue lakes in the Uintas. The one I was thinking of is this one: Blue Lake.

But the more I wander around Google Earth and my atlases the more I'm thinking heading up Murdoch Basin may be the better bet. Just seems like there might be more options up that way.

Anyone who's planning on coming have an opinion?

I told you I'd keep you in the loop ;).

What do you think about Murdoch Basin instead? Echo lake looks like it would be quite nice. Or maybe up to Marshall and Hoover Lakes. We still have a few days to decide.
