Thanks for the input. And yes, that was the wrong Blue Lake. Apparently there are three Blue lakes in the Uintas. The one I was thinking of is this one: Blue Lake.

But the more I wander around Google Earth and my atlases the more I'm thinking heading up Murdoch Basin may be the better bet. Just seems like there might be more options up that way.

Anyone who's planning on coming have an opinion?

Gotcha, I just wanted to make sure you didn't get up there before you realized it was wrong.
We have camped at the one up by haystack a few times, it is not nearly off the beaten path as much as you might think. It is a nice area for sure, and a nice lake. The main road that leads past it is a very easy road, you could defiantly get a car through all the way to spring canyon. So I would expect a fair amount of people up in there. Alot of people see the trial lake turn off and end up in there. Trial and Washington have established campgrounds so they are always busy. Haystack tends to be an overflow from them as well as the other little lakes in the area.

The nicest and least traveled to lakes you can drive to are Murdock basin lakes and once you make the split above the tunnel trail the road is not Subaru friendly, It is 100% high clearance, I did not NEED 4x4 but did take advantage of low range most of the way above the split because of the rocky conditions of the road. You can normally find a great spot at any of the half dozen lakes along the higher section of that road even on the busiest weekends.

Just my .02 based on 20 years of travel in that area.

I vote for this.

I vote for this.

Tomi does too. Mainly because the satellite picture from August 2009 shows Blue Lake is still covered in ice. :D

So we'll head down Murdoch Basin to Echo Lake. If for some reason we decide to head further, I'll leave a sign for you, Steve, and you can head down to the lakes at the end of the road.

I've updated the first post to reflect this.

Blue is a great spot. I was just up at Alexander just below it, last weekend. We sat out in the middle floating and swimming all day. A little chilly but it was really nice. Good thing is...there is a lot of camping in that area so even if you don't get a spot right on the lake, you will be able to find a spot then you can day trip to any number of the lakes. Nice area.

Great! We'll be up at Echo Lake, for for some reason we relocate I'll put a sign up that says I've moved. But most likely if we are not at Echo, we'll probably be up the road a few miles to Marshall or Hoover Lakes.

I'll be with a group in the area. We'll come bug you guys.

sweet, I'd look forward to that sawtooth.

Why not just go scout for fire wood? I have a saw, hatchet, cold chisel and hammer. I have always just cut and split wood on site.

Is wood gathering allowed? A lot of parks ban wood gathering to discourage people from cutting wood that is still growing. I've got a bundle of wood I'll be bringing.

I will be up there with Sawtooth, if I can talk my guys into going to Echo instead of Weber Canyon then we will meet and camp with you there. I will bring my 77 FJ and we can have a great time. I think we will be heading up on Sat. morning, hope to find you all. Will you have a sign posted RME or what?
