S-10 is a good base for your idea, nice sturdy frame. Maybe add a Box For Rox and a D300 and not worry about regearing the axles. Sawzall body for tire fitment.

Gabriels are like $20 a piece and held the Blazer of DOOM up pretty well.You're exactly right Carl. I only mention those items to discourage thoughts of regearing said axles. I believe the biggest expense will be alcohol, once you factor the time required for this build.
And shocks are over rated. Junkyard shocks will be enough performance here.
