I wouldn't pay for just a trail guide book as you can finish all the trails there in one afternoon... A history book, however, is worth much more. there is lots of history there. it would be fun to know.

One afternoon? That is alot of ground to cover to see it all "in one afternoon". While I don't doubt it could be done with some consequence to the vehicle & driver, its by no means the most common type of wheeling done in the canyon. Most wheelers do a single trail each time they are up there, and even spend a night doing so... To do every trail up there in a single day, let alone an afternoon would be a completely different type of wheeling. In fact I would love to see it done.... you choose a Saturday, and I will pay for your gas & give you $50 if you complete all the trails in the canyon... in an afternoon ;)

But, your obviously not my target audience... this is for folks that want to slow down a bit and enjoy the scenery around them. Know whats around the next bend, know what used to sit above the old foundation, who mined this canyon, etc. People that want to get out of their rigs and explore a bit here and there.

As for it being a history book... between the intro, the trail guides and the appendix information, it will likely have more AFC info in one spot than any other book that I know of, so I guess it will fit that bill too.

I have done that before.... several times, one time was even before they put the gate in the head of Major.

on my Polaris... :p

I could do it in my Blazer I'd need a pit stop for fuel in the Tibble Fork parking lot before I did the Silver Lake leg. BUT no it wouldn't be much fun.

I am looking forward to the book for the history. I've spoken (via email) with Kurt several times and he is one of the most knowledgable people I have found on AF.
It is going to be an awesome resource!

I think I would want the book if it told about the history of the canyon. I don't need anything for the trails but there is alot of history up there. The forest service used to do a program that talked about the history and my stepdad has told me a lot. His dad was one of the miners that used to live in the canyon years ago. I think it is neat to know about the area that you go 4wheeling in and why the roads were made and what went on years ago.

i dont really want to spend 30 for a book, but thats me, i like to see different ideas, but i if you are doinbg this for historym, then i wouldnt think you would want to put a big pric etag on it, just a little over printing cost, not to get rich off, it shoudl be a informative, and easy book to get, and not a money maker, plus the cheaper it is, the moe ppl would want to buy it, it walnt hurt the wallet.

just my two cents

Just found this. I think it is a sweet idea!

What is the latest on this?

Work in progress... I have alot of other similar projects I am working on. I'm seriously considering hiring someone to help :-\

History is the emphasis, with a trail guide to get you there. I have thousands of pages of AF Canyon documents. Written reports from miners, oral histories, archeaologist reports, etc. Lots of good info.

I'm not looking to get rich off of the book, but I'm not looking to lose money either. The reason I asked the price isn't so I could judge how much I could make, but rather how much "effort" I could afford to put into it.

i say pro printing and binding. i love history and trail info all in one book. it would be a book i would want to last for a while, not something i would lose pages out of.

i am looking forward to what ever you decide to do.

i agree! i would also like to see historical photos of the area as well. and i will make eksjae read it to me:busted:

Back from the dead...

I'm finally seeing the "light at the end of the tunnel" on some other major projects I've been working on... so I've put my focus back on the AF trail guide. My goal is to have a rough draft for "peer review" available by May/June this year. I'll need the summer to finish some field work and GPS review in the canyon, from there I'll try and have a first edition done by next winter. I've dug out all my stuff... I'll be working on it off/on til spring :D

Still anticipating....

Thanks for your patience... :D

Overall I'm glad I didn't rush anything. Last year I likely learned more about the canyon then all before it. I had the chance to meet with the history specialist working for the forest service. She spent alot of time in the canyon researching each mine, the old buildings, etc as part of a heritage report they had to do on the mines in the canyon before their closures. In addition she gave me alot of other useful info, I'm still sorting and digesting it all.

My biggest hurdle was just finding a time and place to organize everything. I had stuff on 3 computers, 3" stack of papers, a handful of books and alot of random stuff in my head. I picked up a new computer last week and its streamlining my life in some respects :D

Good, come work on it... :p

I need to get down to BYU to chase down some photos they have in their library, not sure what the protocol is for getting copies, but I'm sure they've got a system. I'll do the same for the Utah Historical Society... they've got some copies I would like photos of too. Then, I need to meet with at least two folks, both are old-timers with extensive knowledge in the canyon. Time, anyone have some for sale?
