Rubicon Shakedown Run #1: Mineral Basin, Aug 3rd and 4th

Hey steve you picked a day that works for me :) here's my situation I just recently ran mineral basin with TJDUNKIT ( I feel bad because I can't remember his name at this time) anyways had a blast the jeep didn't have any issues but I have never wheeled at night except getting stuck. And I know I'm not ready for the rubicon yet. What would be a short check list to make wheeling at night easier? Rock lights? I do have some protection in a way of rocker panel skids not so much worried about some damage because I already know what parts would tax me. Very interested in this trip.

Don't feel bad I can't remember your name either, I'm Brian by the way.

The biggest thing you should have is be prepared to stay the night, obviously that's the point of this trip anyway so no big deal.

Do you need rock lights? No, they are nice but I've never had them and wheeled plenty at night. I actually just ordered my first set since I won a gift card at the Jeep show.

Your rig is already plenty capable for Mineral Basin and as you saw there really wasn't much worry of body damage for you on it. Just make sure you are prepared for cold weather, it gets very cold at night up there compared to Ogden.

Thanks brian, my name is dillon lol. This trip would make for a great birthday weekend since my day it's the 5th. Hey steve can you put me on the fence for this? Thanks.

what brian said.

Wheeling at night isn't much different than wheeling in the day. All you need are headlights (i hope your rig has working headlights) and a spotter with a flashlight. It's an easy trial, so I wouldn't worry about anything. I'll have rock lights. Yes, they're nice, but hey're not necessary; especially if you don't plan on doing much night wheeling. I bought some $15 rock lights from Cal Ranch but they're still sitting in the box. They light up the trail really well, but they draw a lot of power, so I switched to some LED lights. I do about 50/50 wheeling at night and day, so the investment was worth it for me. Try night wheeling out and see if you like it before you drop a lot of $ on lights. I really prefer night wheeling. It's more relaxed, not as hot, and I don't feel like I'm in a hurry to get through the trail. It's not for everyone though. We'll see how you like it.

Bring camping stuff. Don't bring lots of extra food, there are bears up there. We can't have a campfire up there, so bring stuff to stay warm. A tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, and warm clothes. Bring bear spray if you have any. I've only seen a bear up there once in about 40 trips up AF Canyon, but it's always best to be prepared.

Do you have rock sliders, or do you have "sorta" rock sliders? A good set of sliders are always good insurance for a trail like this.

I have those diamond plate rocker protectors. I think they came off a rubicon. They handled a decent hit on waynes world. Not the best stuff I'm sure but better then nothing for now.

You can take me off the list for this run, I just realized that this trip falls on my 10th wedding anniversary Lol! The wife may frown upon me ditching her to go wheelin.

this is tomorrow night. I'm excited. Weather looks to be about perfect. Just a reminder, no fires (aside from propane stoves), and it gets chilly up there at night. I'd expect 35-45 degrees at night.
