Rubicon Shakedown Run #1: Mineral Basin, Aug 3rd and 4th

That's just a guess. It's always colder up there than I expect.

I'd still take your boy, just prepare accordingly. Take an extra blanket or two for him.

Sorry, a little change of plans for me. I've decided to do the ULCER ride (long bike ride around Utah lake) in the morning on Saturday. Is it feasible to get up and come down in one night? Are there any gates that close at night? I figure if I turn around by 10:00 I can get down and to bed so I can be up at 5:00am. Would that be too much to get done? Dang it, there needs to be more Saturdays!

Yes, it's feasible to go up and down in one night. The gates are open, you can get out at any time. It's funny how quickly you can get down the trail. Last time it took us about an hour to get down, including a spare tire change, and using the bushranger jack to lift turbominivan off a rock he was stuck on. I'll bet you could get down to tibble in 45 min-hr.

I hope you can make it, but if you have to bail, no biggie.

I've done from the top down to tibble fork in about 45 minutes a couple of times. I've also done it faster but that might not have been considered a safe choice.

Thanks, that's exactly what I was wondering. I definitely want to go, so I'm still planning to go up tomorrow night. If things get too tight, I'll just head back down early. Just being in the fresh air up there erases a whole week of long days.

I'll bring the bear spray. Honestly, I've only ever seen 2 bears up AF canyon, so don't let that scare you from coming.

Let me talk to my youngest son to see what he has in mind. I am back in town and he is feeling left out this summer because we have not done much camping this summer. I have to be back to Kaysville by 12:30. Do you see this as a problem getting back by then?

on a side note, I'm thinking of hiking pittsburg lake and fishing in the early morning. Anyone is welcome to join me if they'd like.

Fwiw little D and I went camping up AF canyon on wed night. It didnt get very cold I would say 55 or 60. That doesnt mean it won't be cold tonight though. Just thought it might give some reference.
Dillion I would still take your boy with you.

Dang I don't know how I missed this one but I did. The dude coming with me to the BBQ has to work Saturday morning or I'd be all over it :(

I know that 4biker is driving the trail, then heading back down tonight, so there's an option to go with him. Did you bring the '79 out to the BBQ?

Ok I'll look into that and see what my friend thinks :)

No 79 this time (boo!) the 4runner complete with OME shocks and a dream catcher will have to be good enough.
