Well, Im back....for a few days. I ended up leaving the pig there. The plan is to head back this weekend and get some more stuff wrapped up before I haul it home.

Yesterday we got the motor running. We had a couple minor issues at first but its running like a champ now. And the exhaust is MEAN. Has a good rumble at idle and up to 2000 rpm but then it gets nasty! I love it!

I cant thank Leroy enough for the work he has done on this thing. Its turning into a respectable rig now.

I sucked at taking pics. I took the camera but forgot batteries and never remembered to buy any. So the only pics I have is what Mitch posted up. I will be better next week.

Im pretty excited how it is turning out!

Got back Monday night late. I just went out and unloaded the Scout and snapped a few pics before it started raining on me.

Enjoy!

Here is how the fuel cell and radiator are sitting behind the back seat. And the blinging trans lines going into the oil cooler on the radiator

Here is the coolant tube up to the motor. Its 1.5 exhaust tube and all of it is bent into position. I love how it snakes behind the PS pump!
Leroysscoutwork009.jpg

I was planning on having to re locate the orbital but with the header mods...it made room to leave it where it was. Just burned out a new mount for it

Here is the bulkhead for the cooling lines. It bolts to the frame. Put a couple petcocks in there for drains to!

Found a perfect radiator hose at napa to snake around the distributer

I bought this K&N filter thinking it would bolt right up to the throttle body which would have looked way clean. Ford decided to change sizes of the tubes in the last couple inches so that didnt work. I trimmed the stock tubes and came up with this. I might make something better somday....might not.

Wiring for the EFI. The computer sits right behind the firewall

I love that my plan for the exhaust and the boatsides actually worked! The exhaust is pretty loud. I might end up putting flowmasters on it but I dont want to. We'll see how bad the wife complains. I will plate the boatsides as well

The sides were a nightmare. Leroy and I thought about them and discussed them for the full 2 weeks. This is what we came up with.

The problems we faced were....my cage sticks inside the cab, my old door jamb sticked out past the sliders, my sloping and pinched hood line, tons of ugly firwall to hide, etc. etc.

Im loving the way this is turning out. It still needs a little more tube and I will plate in between the tube but here is how it sits now.

And here she is sitting on her springs again. I havent measured yet but it sure appears to be sitting lower than it did on the 47s. It might have to go up a inch or so just to make sure I have clearance for everything but Im hoping not.

I drove it out of the shop and around for awhile. It ran great then started stumbling. We found a bunch of red silicon looking crap inside the fuel tank. It was clogging the pump up. No idea how it got there but we just put a temporary pre filter in until it all works its way out.

It was dang nice to drive it again!

The red silicone stuff is the sealant that is used on some tanks. The only solution is to have the tank cleaned out and resealed.

Okay, dumb thought and question time. I have thought about running a rear cooling system. So, what would happen if you started to run too hot? Is there some sort of a shield to protect the occupants from the spray from the radiator? I am thinking like protection for your son and wife. When we used to run rear cooling systems for mud drags and mud bogging there was the rear of the cab on the pick up truck to protect us. What do you do for the Scout?

Also, this is the motor you should have gone with. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IqdYVwVrX1E

Cheston - how do you get in and out of that thing?

I have a system of basically boucing off the front tire and hoping in. It works....most of the time :D

Its just a fabricated aluminum tank. We had the top cut out of it to reweld a broken baffle. No sealant that I could see.

My overflow tube is pointing out the back of the rig. So the only issue I should have would be if I blew a hose off. Im planning on building a little tunnel that will go over both of the hoses and bolt down. In case of a hose blowing the water will be deflected out the back of the rig.

Im keeping my fingers crossed that I just wont run a little warm at all. With the size of the radiator and my kick ace fan....oh and the 10 gallons of water it holds, I think it will run cool.

I am planning on adding to the cage to protect the radiator in a roll over as well

The scout is killer. I remember running rear mounted cooling systems and I was always running warm. 857 horse motors usually run a little on the warm side anyways. I have not seen too many SUV's run a rear mounted system before. I can't wait till we get to wheel together again. I want to check it out closely. See ya in 8 weeks!

The only other thing I can think of is that gasoline was left in the tank so long that it turned to varnish. Let me know I am curious.

i cut the top off it a few years ago cus the baffle inside was broken and floating around, so i welded it back in and let kept putting off installing it in the bronco then ches needed it and here we are.
i cleaned it really good and the pickup hose was new and came off the bronco.

no idea where it came from.

One suggestion, unless you are very tall I would raise the seats as much as possible to see over the hood. That was the only complaint I had about my Scout II so I raised the seat about two inches. I guess you would say that is my SHORT coming not the Scout's.

Ref. the red stuff, did it smell like varnish or gasoline?

Will you have your creation at EJS? I would like to see it.

Im 6' 2" so no to much on the short side.

Ive gotten used to wheelin without being about to see where Im going. ha ha

My seats are pretty close to the stock height and with the hood sloped down, I can actually see better now that I could with the Scout II hood on it

Its not varnish for sure. No smell other than the new gas that I put in. Just one of those mysteries of life I guess. I just hope it works its way out.

Yes it will be at EJS.

I will be there the 21-27th IIRC. Staying at Slickrock campground. Feel free to come by and check it out anytime.

Spent all day today cleaning and getting it in the garage.

It went in fairly easy. Sucked down the suspension and let about half the air out the tires. Then just drove it in with 1/4" to spare!
