nice! It gets dark at 8 up there. We usually ride from 6-8, but sometimes we'll ride all the way 'till 9, and just use our headlights.

I took Thursday off work hoping to head down and ride with you guy's :D

Its a loooonnnnngggggg drive for me so I guess I'm wondering when you guy's would plan to hit the trail? Anyone able to maybe head down much earlier then catch up with the group in the evening? Either way I'm looking forward to AFC as I've never been there

Oh and do I need to bring the streel legal bike will I be ok on the CR?

Andrew, you're in for a treat. It's a blast up there. You do not need to be street legal, just ohv registered with a spark arrestor. I'm glad you'll be coming. I'll need you to ride my bike up some of the tougher sections that I can't. :D

I won't be able to ride 'till about 4. I took today off work (stupid flu) so I can't get off work any earlier than 3 PM on thursday, which puts me at tibble fork by 4. That'll give us 4 hours of good solid riding.

You're welcome to spend the night at my place on Thursday night if you'd like. I've got two spare bedrooms, and I only live 10 min from the mouth of the canyon.

Sounds great Steve thanks and I hope you get feeling better. 4 hours makes the drive worth it to me

If anyone wants to go and needs a ride I'm headed up from Cache Valley and should have plenty of room.

UNSTUCK

But stuck more often.
So Saturday was my first attempt at the single track stuff in AFC. It was pretty hard for me. I don't know the trails at all and was by myself. I started on the 040 trail, as it's the first I came across. I made it through the three stream crossing and then the trail headed up hill fast. I made it up the first part of the hill and then it turned to the left a bit and that is where I stopped. Between the water running down it, the ruts, and some horses, it was to much. I did like that there was little to no rock on the trail. It was nice with just the dirt. The next trail I came across was the 111 trail, I think. It went up the left side of 085 and was more of an ATV trail. It was a pile of loose rock the entire way. I went about a mile up and gave up on it. From there I went back to 085 and headed up the Mineral Basin road. Once the rocks got as big as my tires I called it quits there too.

So the Thursday night thing sounds great, but Thursdays are hard to get away and I know I will get in your guy's way. Can someone suggest a better trail for me to give it another shot with? Doesn't have to be AFC, but maybe something around SLC. Or is anyone up for some beginner trail riding on a Saturday morning? Thanks.

I remember a friend told me that 40 (with the 3 stream crossings) was an easy trail he took his wife on. THe first time I rode it I couldn't believe it. It was a lot more challenging than I had anticipated. He later told me that it had washed out a lot more than when he did it back in the day. It took a few attempts, but I can now ride 40 all the way up without crashing (quite the feat for me.) In fact, it's one of my favorite trails now. I went one tooth lower on my front sprocket and it really helped with those trails.

You actually turned around on the toughest part of trail 40. It doesn't get tons easier for half a mile or so, but it doesn't get any harder than what you already rode. In fact, a mile later, on that same trail, is the best trail up AFC (in my opinion). It's a series of uphill turns with zero rocks in the trail, and the turns have little natural berms to them. It's so much fun.

If you want to join us on Thursday, you're welcome to. You won't be holding me back that's for sure. And you can learn a lot by watching the other good riders. If you're down to give it a shot, you're welcome to join us this Thursday. But we will definitely be taking trail 40 up from Tibble, that's almost always where we start.

Wait 'till you get to the ridge trail (152?) above that 40, heading towards forest lake. it makes 40 look like cake. I totally suck at that part of 152 trail, but I've gotten through it twice now. It gets a little better each time.

For an easier ride up American Fork Canyon, you can ride the fire road all the way up to pole line pass, and venture on to some of the singletrack from there. There are some fun places to explore up by silver lake flatts too. The dirt road will take you all the way up, overlooking major evan's.

I'd be happy to take you up there on a mellow trail sometime. I've got the noob run this saturday morning, but i'm usually available on saturday mornings.

I used to only license my bikes in Idaho (10+ years ago) because I live right on the border and never had a problem. Now the law has changed and if you ride in Utah you have to register in Utah :(

Idaho offroad tags for dirtbikes and atv's are $10 each. I licensed 3 bikes in Utah this year and it wasn't even close to $30 total :rofl: I don't blame those who don't register I personally think the state could get their money elsewhere. Either way just make sure you have a spark arrestor because that fine is pretty steep I hear.

I was going to come on this ride but I am going to go fishing on Friday so I have to get some work done Thursday. I still have to put the rubber on the bike too.

Awesome Thursday ride everyone thanks a bunch for everything! It was 5 hours round trip for me to get there and back but well worth it especially since I had never been before. The decent into Forest Lake was my favorite part, but every bit of it was a blast from start to finish. You guy's that are familiar with the area know the scenery is spectacular and the trail network was nice and organized. Trail markers are something I'm not used to seeing lol.

Steve thanks again for letting me ride your bike--the KDX/CR is awesome and it turned out great! I can't believe you're a first season rider especially taking on those rocky sections with such a great attitude. Yahoo!
