This isn't the first time I've posted this.
Preferential consideration is given to those who apply online. Watch for job openings and apply for what you want. DO NOT APPLY FOR MORE THAN ONE POSITION. IT SHOWS THEM YOU CAN’T FOLLOW DIRECTIONS. IT’S THAT IMPORTANT.
Train service is where most people start out at. I just looked and they're hiring in SLC, Ogden, and Provo for the Wasatch Front guys. Get you apps in guys. You won't have a chance of getting hired if you don't apply.
Dan.

I've seen those jobs posted and I'm wonderin' if somebody small, say Ollie's size, could handle those jobs...? :D Or are they more of a muscle-head guy type job?

Oh, and yes, I've read through the job listing and see what they expect you to be able to handle. Just wonderin' if you had some real info on it...? LIke how often one would really be liftin' the heavy stuff? The thing is, I'm not a big guy, but I can move and lift the weight they're talkin' about, just don't think I could do it every 5 minutes... Don't want to waste anyone's time with fillin' out an app if I don't think I could handle it.

I applied for that and got turned down...I have been a suit for 3 years so I am probably not what they are looking for...is there a way to go talk to some people or is online the best way to do it...if so, I struck out!!

Maybe twice a year. Unless you work with a really crappy engineer who can't keep his train in one piece. Really!!!
If I had to lift something heavy right now, it'd kick my a$$. The only thing I lift now is my grip into the cab of a locomotive.
Apply!! Apply!! Apply!! The worst thing that can happen is that YOU can say no.
Dan.

There's plenty of diffrent jobs available, the one I got will probably be somewhat physical, but most of the heavy lifting and spike pounding is done by machine. ;)

You can get jobs doing Car Repair... Welding, Fabbing, etc, all day long.

I'm no 'muscle-head' & I got the job. Granted, it's outside 24/7 kinda work & would be dirty, but I'm planning on sticking with it and working my way up into a cushy job, one like Dan has.

For you, I don't know. MOW has a different contract. When I worked for the UP, I had a 5/2/98 trainmans date, and 10/31/98 engineers date. Basically I went right into engine service. You may have to wait a little longer because you're not in train service. I don't think it's two years though. I think you can change crafts after only a year.

I was told 2 years, they changed it because alot of people were getting hired on only to transfer elsewhere, leaving alot of turnover in the entry level positions.

Our hiring manager mentioned something about how Train Service was viewed as a PITA? It sounds great to me, but I know nothing. Eventually, I want to end up a Engineer. These first 2 yrs will give me the time to see exactally how to get there.

That could be the case. I'm not sure though.

You guys always have to get out of way. That's why you'll be refered to as "Maintenance in the way" by us "PITA Train Service employees". :D

Definitely more. UP starts their employees at 75% union scale. I don't know what freight is making anymore. Probably $15.00ish(?)+/-.
