Something like this sounds awesome! ! Hopefully you can all do it another time because my wife is due then. Sounds almost exactly like what I have been looking for.

That's six learners and two teachers, let's cap this round right there unless Josh is good with more heads. If anybody isn't going to make it, sing out just in case somebody else wants your spot.

UNSTUCK

But stuck more often.
This group should work out just fine. I wonder how many welding hoods we can come up with? It would be nice to be able to have the group watch us show a technique then try it themselves. I have two hats. Anyone else bringing a hat? Anyone want to loan the group a hat?
I think I have enough scrap for our needs, but I don't have any thin plate. If you have 1/8 to 1/4"plate you want to bring that would be great.

If you have nothing to bring, bring juice and doughnuts. :)

Kevin,
I'd recommend more sessions with fewer people if the host can be talked into it unless you are shooting for more of a social event than welding school.

I just finished helping 11 boy scouts get their welding merit badges and over the course of it found that two watching while one was doing (teacher or students) was about the max number at once.

Any more and it was hard for the others to really get a view of what's happening. With the kids, if there wasn't a clear view I'd lose their attention and then had to repeat information they missed.

Getting proficient requires extended arc time and is yet another negative for larger groups, although in this case the students can continue at home which was not the case with the scouts.

I can help with hosting if there are some that would find Draper more convenient.
I have a big MIG welder, TIG, Stick (a buzz-box and 110V flux-core would be good if available), and Plasma cutter .

More than anything else, spend a long weekend and watch everything on Jody Colliers site: http://www.weldingtipsandtricks.com/ then go practice.

I agree with all of this. We will see how this group size plays out and make adjustments for the next classes. The nice thing about welding is that to become good at it requires skill in other areas too. Such as grinding. So we will play with them too. We should be able to keep these guys busy for an hour or two.
If there is interest, I'd be happy to do one on one teaching as well to people that are serious about getting into welding.

I'm also willing to do one-on-one as well (starting with Kevin's bumper if that smelly Toyota ever runs again).
With the scouts, I couldn't really turn them loose on other things without direct supervision :D

My standard warning was "If it's red, it's hot. If it's not red, it's still probably hot"
Should have seen them jump when I hit the table with a sanding disk to clean off the spatter.

if multiple classes are done, I have room and tools to host if needed. But someone else will have to teach. And someone else has to bring the dew and doughnuts.

I have a HF hood that I'll bring.

I might be interested in some one on one at some point but am working to bankroll a welder at the moment. I was hoping to get one this month but I don't know that is going to be feasible.

I will be in my garage a lot in the next few weeks at night (starting next week), if anyone is wanting to do some welding and is near the herriman area, your more than welcome to come by and throw down some beads. Might force you to help move a engine and tranny around though.

we have a small shop in west valley too that we could host a night as well. We have a couple of miller tig and mig machines. would be cool to spread some knowledge around and meet more people.

I do have my own helmet. I might have an old one floating around. I like this idea a lot and if I need to bring something let me know.

I will buy a helmet and maybe a welder. I should end up with some money after Christmas and may invest in a welder, especially if,I am going to learn how to use one.

Dang...I'd love to get involved in this! I have only used a stick welder a few times...back in 1983. lol! :ugh:
I have a simple project I want to fab up for my trailer (Scepter can holder), but don't have the equipment or experience. Maybe I'll invest after the first of the year as well.
