Welding night!

I don't know any close to sandy, but i have used Airgas off of 3500s.

Wasatch metal should have a bigger spool, I don't think Home Depot or lowes has that though, I think they just have the small spools

SSS has it on sale right now for about $35. Not sure if that's a good price though. I get 40 pounders from airgas.

Does wire brand matter much with solid wire? Are there known brands out there that aren't as good as others? I don't plan on using the harbor freight stuff but other than that?

Also, didn't hop in the thread to properly thank Josh and the other guys for the instruction. I enjoyed it and although I haven't managed to get back out to burn some metal it was good to get a lot of my silly questions answered.

Certain brands weld better than others, that's my experience, I like esab wire, or I think I run a Lincoln wire. I usually get all my stuff at a welding store, and if they have multiple ones, I usually go for a name brand or the not cheapest one. And ask them if they have ran them. At my old work we usually ran esab so I am use to that. At school it was Lincoln wire I believe.

Thanks for the response, absolutely right, Home Depot and Lowes don't carry the big boy spools and the Miller 250 I'm working with doesn't have the second smaller spindle for the tiny spools.

For those further up north looking for a good welding supply house, I use Norco welding supply in Ogden. It is just off of the old highway, hwy 89, in West Haven. I have been buying from them for quite a few years now and they have treated me well. They have a good supply of wire, gasses, hoods and about anything welding related you can think of.

Just as an FYI, I believe the last spool I purchased was Sowesco wire, .030" ER70s-6 and I paid around $70.00 for a 33-pound spool. Sowesco is a division of Pinnacle Alloys.

Personally, I prefer the -6 wire to the -3 that seems to be quite popular. The -6 wire has a bit more silicone in it and the toes seem to wet out a bit better.

Again, just my opinion.

Mike.

On edit, I just read that the question was asked for the SLC area. Sorry about that, I spouted off Ogden without seeing the actual area requested. I am sure there is a Norco Welding supply in SLC as well as Airgas.

Also, I agree on the welding wire as someone else mentioned above. I used Lincoln a few years ago but it was quite a bit more money. I then stumbled across the Pinnacle brand and have been using it ever since and I have been pretty pleased with it's weld quality.
