Yard project continued....

I found used billboard tarp from an outfit in SL for about $20. I picked up a 12x24' tarp so it folded in half perfectly in my 12x12' patio area, and at 13mil thick you can't beat that price on weed block material from the box stores.Backyard Project (48).jpeg

Then I moved 100+ retaining wall bricks for what feels like the hundredth time, and set them in their final resting place; thank God. I scored free sand late last week, so I got that trucked over 1 wheelbarrow load at a time...

Backyard Project (52).jpeg

Sand just about where it needs to be... I borrowed a landscaping rake after this to get it a bit more uniform.

Backyard Project (54).jpeg

Looking at it we felt confident we had more than enough... It never works out that way though. I've had these flagstones sitting on a pallet for a good 3yrs now. I traded a handful of holsters for them back in SGUSA days.

Backyard Project (55).jpeg

Started with the straightest pieces around the edges, and used thickest stones on the left moving to thinner stones on the right. It was much too late to change the grade towards the gravel for water runoff, something I did not consider when we were grading. So, I decided to make the best grade I could using the sand and thicknesses of the stones to grade towards the right, where there is a buried defunct 15" irrigation pipe that water will hopefully run to. We'll see.

Backyard Project (56).jpeg

Got to this point and was left with a few perfectly square pieces, which I was hoping to use as stepping stones elsewhere... Quick search on KSL and I found a guy with a stack of extra flagstones that just may finish the job.. Price was right too at just $20.

Backyard Project (57).jpeg

So with the extra flagstones that I picked up, and breaking the square pieces to not look so square we barely made it... I'm sure I'm pushing the limits on many of the gaps, but I really don't care. I'll lay down some Sakrete paver set - polymeric sand tonight... hopefully get this thing buttoned up.

Mike, your videos could be hours long and I would still watch them. You're a wealth of knowledge and skill.

Mike

Thanks!

Looks really nice. What's the goal? Firepit area?

Yessir. Eventually I may build out a brick lined fire-pit, but for now we have an above ground metal fire-pit that will work. I picked up a metal pergola last week as well, which needs a little TLC but should be a nice addition. Toss in some light strands and misters and it'll be a great place to chill come summer.

Bonus treasures from 2' underground....

Marbles, tons of different bottle pieces including a 7Up bottle that I dated to the early 1940's (i'm weird), jar that we found more than 50% of the pieces to, playing dice, toy gun parts, and so on... My 7y/o watched the ground like a hawk as I raked up thousands of rocks from the patio area..

"Dad, stop raking when I say I see something and just let me do my job!" -7y/o

Got everything ready for the stucco crew in a couple of days, but some sacrifices had to be made. The tile supplier has been jerking me around for four weeks. I gave up and went with an asphalt roof.

Last night’s project consisted of putting my right rear door of my Jeep back together before mowing the lawn.

Friday night the wife and I went and picked up groceries and the right rear door wouldn’t unlock.

Saturday morning I tore the panel off to diagnose and determined that the motor/servo in the door lock mechanism had failed.

I didn’t have the resistance spec’s but when I measured the circuit it was open so that’s definitely not correct. Being a motor I would think it would be relatively low resistance so I called my local dealership. They didn’t have one but said they could have one early Monday so rather than put everything back together I just left it apart and picked up the new locking mechanism today on my lunch hour. After work I reassembled it.

Original shows open.

For anyone who ever has to remove one of these inner panels, you have to cut the two vertical oval cutouts shown in the picture. They’re already scored so they cut fairly easy with a utility knife. Then grab a pick or I used a cotter pin tool.

It’s hard to see in the picture but just inside of each of the holes you just cut out, there is a clip in each you gently push inward on and it releases the glass. Then raise the glass up in the channel and tape it out of the way and finish removing the panel. Installation is just the opposite and let the window lock back into position.

I ended up using 320lbs of Polymeric sand on this project, watered for a few hours to make sure I got the water to soak into that much paver set... 3/4 of the cost of this patio is the paver set sand.

I added the small eagle into the paver set as a fun reminder of the treasures that my 7y/o pulled out of this spot of the yard.

Question is now, do you recommend a stain or a seal coat? I have no experience with this... The stones look better when wet, so I am curious what I could coat the patio with to give it a constant wet look.
