This is basecamp for the Mormon Church, that's how it goes. *shrug. I'm not LDS, but I try not to get too worked up about the peculiarities of living in UT.

I can appreciate this. (in my mind)The benefits far outweigh any inconveniences that the Utah culture might inflict on ones life living in the minority.

I saw a bumper sticker that said "I wish an apple a day would keep the mormons away." I couldn't help myself think, if you feel that way about mormons, why not keep driving to somewhere where they weren't?

You all know in my original post I never mentioned the mormon church at all... so how did this all come down to that cult/religion? (didn't want to piss off either side there..)

Natural extension between the two sides I think. 4th on a Sunday, dominant religion, natural complaint is "the church makes the celebration happen some other day". *shrug

... Yet nobody seems acknowledge the two or so posts about it not being just a 'Utah' thing like some want to believe. ;)

It's just been an interesting topic with anything relating to Utah and living here. Previous threads dealing with living in the area have had some polar comments on either side. I am interested in what the RME community has to say though.

The comments about enjoying the 4th in Idaho are funny to me 'cause I had a customer today (6th) wonder where we were yesterday (5th). He was unaware of the Utah schedule.

I absolutely believe the founding fathers were divinely inspired to draft the Constitution, Declaration of Independance and so on.

I would give credit to the men and women of all colors and faiths that shed their sweat, blood and tears in the early years to build this country into what it has become. It was man that suffered through long hard winters, droughts, died on the battle fields and faced many other struggles, not God. Giving credit to a supreme being takes away from what we; men, women and children accomplish.

We celebrate the 4th on the 4th and have done so for years. 10 years ago we started going to the Bees (it was the Buzz back then) baseball games and they have a great fireworks show afterward. They get better every year. Love it!

Fwiw most (all?) of my vendors were closed on the 5th as well as UPS and USPS. Pretty hard not to treat it like a holiday when the nations business do?

This thread is annoying me. Go B!tch to your Mayor and city council folks we can't do anything for you here.

I'm ready for a lock.

While I don't think we need to lock it I do agree that rather that the solution to the perceived problem isn't a faceless post on a forum but rather some civil action. Many of these celebrations and events are planned by volunteer committees, offer your help and maybe you can sway the vote.

You know, it's not just the 4th that's usually not celebrated when it falls on a Sunday for obvious reasons, but I also have noticed that when Halloween falls on a Sunday it too is celebrated on Saturday. And before you bag on my comment, I know that the 4th is a "holiday" and Halloween isn't. It's just that when anything happens to fall on a Sunday it seems to me that the fricken world would come to an end if it was ever celebrated on the day it fell on if that day happened to be Sunday.

Hell, you can't even buy a car in Utah on a Sunday. That's just wrong in my book.

Just so you know, I highly doubt god had anything to do with the founding of this country. It may have been founded on certain religious beliefs, but I doubt god was sitting around the round table "divinely" instructing them on how it needed to be done. That's borderline with the belief of somebody being in direct contact with god right now and is his spokesman sorta speak. Silly!!!

I absolutely believe the founding fathers were divinely inspired to draft the Constitution, Declaration of Independance and so on.

FWIW, the founding fathers were predominantly Deist, so divinely or not, it wasn't necessarily a Christian inspiration.

Or, I suppose if you look at it as the Church of England using a divine mandate to ostracize protestants to the extent that they were willing to give up everything and risk major illness to sail across the world thus laying the framework of a protestant Christian nation that wanted a separation between church and state, then I do suppose in that way a divine Christian inspiration could have been the catalyst for the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.....if you believe that sort of thing ;) That definitely wouldn't be my analysis.

Was that way off topic?
