....and of course way back when, similar rigs were used to haul drag cars all over... big ramp-backed trucks. Those were cool, and I like the self-contained aspect of it. :D

Very cool. I don't have any pics but I've seen a couple of guys transport their rigs in this manner. Their used to be someone in UROC with a similar setup, I'm sure Carl or one of the other UROC regulars might remember who it was. I always though it was a neat and wasy way to get a rig around without the hassles of a trailer.

Tom LeBlanc (Captain America) had his 6wheeler, and Niel Lillard had his Semi that he did something similar.

The plan is to drive the buggy right on the bed so the rear tires will be sitting on the back and the front up against the cab
Cool.I couldn't tell how long the bed was and if the box was permanent.I used to have a '77 Chevy crewcab that I though about building a flatbed hauler out of.

whats the plan for paint? Black or maybe bed liner? Or are you going to leave it rust;)

While I am kinda partial to the rust I am thinking about throwing a coat of Hurculiner on the ramps and the bed to add a little traction. If not I plan to paint it black but I am waiting until I get a couple last items welded up.

kinda funny I just ran across this on pirate. I like how this guy recessed spots in the bed for the tires but that is more work then I want to do.

thats kind of funny. Spent hours of work cutting spots for the tires to sit in but his ramps are so flimsy he has to put jackstands under them????

Looks way cool tho

Don't forget about safety chain attachment points on the hitch end.

Are you sure the back end of the bed that I see the bolts going into will not tear out? The weight of the back end of the Jeep/buggy will be on that as well as any weight on the hitch. Make sure you add a winch point too at the front of the bed just in case you should ever need to winch your crawler onto the back of the truck (breakdown)!

I think this is a great idea. If I had a flatbed, I might just consider doing the exact same thing.

p.s. Don't foget to put your License Plate back on :)

You said ther are 12 bolts but I only see 6, is there more support that I can't see? Is the 1/4" angle on the backside-inside too to distribute the load from the bolts?

I have already added the safety chain attachment for the receiver on the dovetail, but are you asking if I am going to put safety chains from the truck to the dovetail?

the other 6 bolts go up into the bed so it would have to tear out 6 you can see in the pics and shear 6 that point up. If I get any kind of flex out of the bed when loading I will stiffen it up but I don't think it will.

I plan to put a D ring right in the center of the bed up by the cab to winch it up with if I need to and also to act as another place to strap it down to

The plate is already back on but I broke the light for it so I have to go get another one.

I have hauled my cj5 on the back of a 2wd chevy flatbed. It just fit with no extentions on it looked funny but it worked. just back it to a ledge and drove it on and off.

I reworded that because it sounded rude to me when I reread it. LOL, you quoted before I could get it changed. I hope you didn't feel it was rude.
The bolt going up into the bed would be perfect, I didn't see those. I think that should be strong enough, but I am no engineer :)

As for chains, I was just talking about attaching points on the addon dovetail. But, since your dovetail is removable, I wonder if the law requires chains from the truck to the "new hitch"? I don't know, but as long as your not towing it shouldn't matter. I guess most all factory hitches are "removable".
Maybe I should take the bed off my truck....
