I just ready a study about the high rate of vehicle collisions with crows in Wyoming.
The DWR started collected dead crows off the highway for examination.
They were able to identify pieces of paint and metal in the beaks of each of the dead crows.
What was more unusual about it was that each scraping of paint was from a pickup truck.
The DWR set up observation stands along some of the major roads and recorded the behavior of the crows. They learned that pairs of crows would come to eat roadkill.
One crow would eat, while the other was a lookout.
Each time a car would come by, the look out would warn the eating crow by saying ‘caw, caw’, and they would fly away… however, other times the lookout crow had no word for ‘truck’ and could not warn the other.
