I just talked to him and it looks like the plan is to meet at the Carl Juniors parking lot at the district (114th and Bangerter Highway) at 12:30 and then drive around to Tooele. Obviously anyone that can come would be great. Anyone that is in SLC further North we can just meet us along Bangeter on the way.

If that's the road I think it is, be careful at the end of it. Last spring there was a trailer down the side in one spot, and a truck rolled to the bottom in another. It might be exciting in the snow:D I do enjoy the view from here, but its much better up close;)

Today's view @ 10am looks like light snow

Well, like Scott said it was a bust, but I feel much better now I've given up hope :D. I guess the first clue of the situation is when I slid off the road 100 feet from him. We then walked up to his truck that was further off the road then mine and I look down and see an abandoned car that had rolled off where he had slid off. We hooked chains and straps together and tried using my winch but it just kept tipping me where I had slid off so we got me back onto the road and then re-hooked up to him. Tried to pendulum him up onto the road which didn't work. Just got him a little further off. We finally called it on account of cold and getting late and my winch not being powerful enough to pull him alone and not wanting to slide Scott's Jeep off the road. So I then slid mine back off the road backing out in the same place. We then hooked my winch up around a tree a ways up and back to my rear bumper and pendulumbed me back onto the road and we lit a shuck for home.

We will definitely need to regroup on this. My guess is we need at least a 12,000 winch and to start as early in the morning as possible (we didn't start till afternoon). The biggest obstacle is the road is so small you can't really get more than one, maybe two vehicles in line to pull him and everytime you drive by where I slid off you will slide off, unless we shore it up with logs or something.

Here are a couple of pics. Like I said his truck is about a foot lower now and can't go back any further because of a stump. A chainsaw would take care of the stump though. It is being held up by a strap and a couple of chains.

If anyone has any ideas I'm listening. As far as when, I'm easy except for Saturday when I have a funeral...not that you need me to go.

Are there trees up above to attach straps and snatch blocks to? I'd say two winches, one going up above to a snatch block and down to the front of the truck. The second goes up to a snatch block and down to the rear of the truck. Put tension on both winches to keep the truck on the hill, and have him back up onto the road. You'll have to take out that stump, I guess. We did a very similar recovery in that canyon a few years ago.

ya there are Plenty of trees to attach to but I think we would need some extra cable (well more than we had with us). We had something set up towards the front and rear but it just didn't do the job.. if we can get 2 winches win enough cable and straps to work around each other it would work :)... we just didn't have enough cable to pull it off and couldn't get in front and behind to do a 2 winch pull either :(

After seeing the pictures, that's what I was thinking, snatch blocks up to the trees above. Perhaps use a strap tied to a tree (with tension on it) on the back of the winching vehicle, so the winching vehicle doesn't get pulled while winching.

Good effort guys, that's not a good situation and the snow doesn't help.

Another idea... get 2 vehicles with winches on each side of the truck, run both cables up into the trees and back down to the truck with snatchblocks. Make sure the cables are close to parallel and pull it uphill.

That's what I would do, I mean that's the solution presenting itself.

Not a one of those side trails ever looked like a good idea to me and the legality is kind of iffy as well. :D

Yeah, and if the winching vehicles start getting dragged, at least they'll be sliding uphill rather than down.

the problem i see is keeping your traction while you winch the truck.

does the truck have a reciever? use a reciever mount winch to pull the ass end up onto the road. while someone on the front side helps stabalize with a winch and snatch block.
