Went up AF canyon this morning. Rode up Mary Ellen's. (Horrible, horrible trail for a bike) just got started on our way down when my buddy hit a rock, crashed, and dislocated his shoulder  I ended up riding down to the parking lot, getting his truck, and driving back up to get him. Took a little over 2 hours to get down up and down again.
Incase any of you get the idea to drive a 4 door cummins 3500 up Mary Ellen's... Know that it is a long, bumpy, scary, and tippy ride. I don't recommend it ;)

I sold my WR450 today. I must of sold it too cheap but now I am going to go over the the Orange team for a try. I am looking for a KTM 300, still dont know if it will be an XC or an XCW yet. Any opinions?

I don't like the pds rear on the xcw's but I doubt you'll care, you don't really ride track or whoops.
The new xc's have the 4cs forks that almost everyone thinks are better.
I dunno up to you. I felt like the xcw was setup too soft for my style (track and desert) and I'm a flyweight.
I do love the the idea of a wide range trans though.

Only difference between the two if it is pre 2012 will be the transmission. Starting in 2012 the XC came with linkage rear suspension. I can't remember the year, but they also changed to the closed chamber forks on the XC model. Personally I don't care for the low first gear on the XC-W and don't really have a need for the taller 6th gear.

Once you get used to riding the 2 stroke you will love the power delivery & torque of the 300.

I grew up riding 2 strokes. Back in my glory days I rode the big 490s from Yamaha. I sure wish Yamaha made an electric start light weight smoker. One of my riding friends has been selling Yamahas in Layton for probably 20 years. He gave me the phone number to call to bitch about KTM kicking Yamaha's rear in regards to this market. I know it won't do any good but I will feel better about it.

I love my 2012 XC. Linkage, 6 speed, fun. :D
Is 1st gear too high on the XC? I dont know if the 6th will ever be an issue with me but there are very few occasions that I will have to get to 55-70 mph. There really isnt much of a reason for me to go that fast. Maybe I will just walk over to your dads and steal his Husaberg. Is he ever going to ride it?

Headed to moab on the 11th to sell my jeep. Plan on taking my bike and riding. I should have room for 3 guys and bikes if anyone wants to ride. I can't leave until about 11. Puts us there at 2. Ride for 4-5 hours. Eat at milts. Head home. Although I'm already driving, a little gas money would be cool but not totally necessary. Just want to keep my wife happy with the least money spent. ;)

I will be herding cows that weekend but Russ could come along and you guys could pick up my bike for him to ride and see if he likes the XC transmission. As far as first being to high, I don't think so. I have never wished for it to be lower, even when riding the 5MOH. If you don't need the higher 6th gear, I would just gear down the XC to make it lower.

Dang that's tempting. I hope to have found something by then. That's just an aweful long way to drive for a few hours

We will talk this weekend in SG. I have a few new trails for you.

Found nd a couple nice 250 XCWs. What is the 300 kit run and what is the difference between the 250 and 300? I would consider a 250 with a 300 kit

Russ, I think Paul is spot on with his XC vs. XCW advice. In the years you're looking at, the tranny is the only real difference. As I mentioned in my text to you, the complaint I've heard on the XCW is the gearing is spaced weird on the XCW, you have too big of a gap in the lower gears which usually means you're riding in the wring gear on the single track or more technical trails. I could still hit 90ish on a dirt road on my XC so top end wasn't a problem. For me, I love the PDS rear shock. I don't ride track and avoid whoops so the trade-off of being able to pull the rear shock with two bolts to make adjustments, service, etc was soooo nice on the PDS. You can also find XCs in those years with e-start, lights, etc and if the bike you find doesn't have any of the items the XCW does, they can be added. Electric is pretty much the same, lights are simply plugging in a light, you can add an e-start if you want (the e-start on these years of bikes suck so a lot of guys end up taking them off anyways...and kicking these 300s is cake). If it were me, I'd be looking for an XC, but (as I mentioned to you already) I wouldn't pass up an XCW if you found a killer deal on one.

With the rekluse I have found that first is great most of the time. Sometimes it is too low but second it too high and occasionally first is too high. I plan to drop a tooth on the countershaft to fix both of these conditions. When do you want to ride the berg? I really need to get out......
