Other Region Upcoming Trip: Rubicon Trail Lake Tahoe, CA Sept 5-8th 2012

you're welcome to meet us at loon lake if you'd like, then you can drive as fast as you want. I hear there's a nice campsite about a quarter of a mile down the road. If you beat us there, you can pick the spot. If we beat you there, we'll pick the spot.

Sounded like TJDukit was going to be there ahead of the group, is that still the plan?

I don't think I'll be setting any land speed records on the stretch from Carson City area to Loon Lake. I may even have to plan extra time so I don't get there too late. I'm 533miles to where I'm leaving my tow rig, and 116 from there to Loon Lake. So, about 8 hours for the first leg (stopping for lunch) and 2-3 hours for the second leg. I drove down to South Lake Tahoe last year, and it's a pretty twisty road, we'll be taking our time.

I will be sure to beat you all there and get there in the daylight.

I'm not trailering--which is no secret--but I still must say I am surprised by the proposed speeds I'm seeing here. I guess I was expecting the trailer guys to want to keep a more mellow pace (read: 65 mph or so) than what has been said so far. TJs ain't exactly aerodynamic off the showroom floor, and adding lots of lift and 35" tires sure won't make the situation any better, so I am also hoping for no head/cross winds.

I guess what I'm saying is this: I won't be the one cracking the whip and encouraging us to push harder.

Ok, I guess he hasn't posted to this thread. I'll see if I can find him and PM.

I'll just go the flow of traffic and what's comfortable/safe. I typically tow around the speed limit, maybe a little faster depending on conditions. Slower down hills. 9000# td tow rig pulling a 6500# trailer.

Oh, and 64mph is the recommended speed on the I-80 stretch through Elko. Unless you have a police escort.

Two related thoughts:

#1: the only speeding ticket I have received in my life was just outside Winnemucca, NV way back in the summer of 1994. I was caravaning to Sacramento with two other cars, and a police plane VASCARed us while coming down a steep mountain pass and--shocker--we were all over the 65 MPH limit at that time. At the bottom of the hill, there were three cruisers--no more, no less--sitting at the side of the road awaiting their prey. I was written up for 12 over, while my two friends were both written up for 15 over. Oh, well.

#2: the last time I drove across I-80 through Nevada (fall 2009), I think the speed limit was 75 MPH for most of it.

x2. I drive I-80 to CA at least twice every year and that stretch of 65 MPH entering and leaving Elko is NOT a suggestion. Luckily I've always stayed under and never had a problem. I do see at least 1 person pulled over every time I pass through.

As for the rest of it, 75 MPH is the posted limited and I usually cruise at 78 MPH with no problems.

well, my rig is just about ready. After the trip up mineral basin last weekend, I'm not even a little bit worried about my rig making it.

Matt is putting the finishing touches on my Jeep this evening (HD tie rod, longer swaybar disconnects, etc) and I plan to pick it up tonight. This leaves me precious little time to try it out before running the Hanging Tree Trail, but damn the torpedoes--full speed ahead!

Anyone bringing kids? My 16yo is out, but still bringing my 9yo. What about dogs?

Spent some time today re-wiring the trailer. Just replaced the trailer brakes and they still weren't working. Lights were cracked as well. And...a few weeks back my 16yo drove away from the trailer with it still plugged in.

He hooked the wires back up, but when I plugged it in the other night, the marker lights were blinking with the left turn and so on. Turns out he matched the wire colors the labels on the inside of the plug, but that wasn't how the factory wired the trailer.

We re-wired the plug but the brakes still wouldn't work. Much trouble shooting later, turned out to be one of the factory splitters. Replaced it and the brakes work!

I'll be bringing my dog. As long as your dog is friendly, in your control, doesn't bark through the night, and doesn't pee on other people's tents it's welcome to tag along. Same thing goes for kids. ;)

Anyone else bringing kids?

Just returned from Tahoe last night. I didn't take my rig. However, I still found the entrance and exit to the con. Found that you can park your rig at the ice house resort for $7.50 a nite. But, you would have to drive you rig 20 miles up the canyon to the con. There is also parking at the entrance to the con which is where I will prob be parking mine. My 18 yr old is going with me. The average speed is 75 miles. However, there is a lot of construction and the speed limit is 55mph. Just an FYI.
From the exit of the con to the entrance of the con is approx 2 to 2 1/2 hours. So.... my plan is to go to either Cadillac Hill or observation point and turn around and head back to loon lake. Is anyone else not street legal and wants/needs to turn around to get to there trucks?
