UNSTUCK

But stuck more often.
Hard to catch fish when bears are everywhere. Think we saw ten of them. One shared a sandbar with me for a few seconds while I slowly backed into the river to put some distance between us. He was les than 20 feet from me. Wish I had the camera out for that one. They really had no interest in us though. So many fish caucuses around us. That’s all they wanted. They would grab them out of the river then run back into the trees. We don’t worry about black bears. People were talking about two brown bears that were there last night. Those scare me.

Lucas trying his hand at fly fishing. The “flip and floss” is not your usual technique for fishing but it’s what we do here for reds. This ultra light rod proved too light for these fish.

This has been my most animal filled trip, probably ever. Would love to see a brown bear still….

Which river is that, kenai? We caught 4 sockeye off that in June and 4 on the kasilof along with some dollies and wild trout. No bears that we saw (even on the promised bear beach) but lots of momma moose with twins which was kinda crazy.

Russian River, which dumps into the Kenai. If the fish are in, you have a great chance of seeing bears here. This is the first time I’ve seen black bears here. Mostly brown. Much safer with the blacks though.
The Russian is my favorite and go to river on the Kenai Peninsula. Deep forest and beautiful, with a small river you can walk down the middle of.
