    Bivy Sacks. Feedback?

My old man has the 2 piece military bag. It's older so I'm sure they are lighter now, but his is heavy as hell. It'll keep you toasty warm well below zero though. I've used it a -15 and was hot as could be in that thing

"The folly of trusting the Fed to manage lands better than the states." Thread Split

I did go to public school, and I'm proud of it. I also have a degree in this stuff and know exactly what I'm talking about. I've also lived in Utah for over 30 years and do know exactly what's going on. Its not like I switched careers to take on these issues or anything. Oh wait that's exactly...

"The folly of trusting the Fed to manage lands better than the states." Thread Split

Joseph, you're not right. How is trading one master for another any better? How is blindly trusting the State to do what's in the best interest of its people better than blindly trusting the federal govt. At least with the Feds there is a plan in place to bitch about. I don't see any plan...

    Bivy Sacks. Feedback?

I just get claustrophobic. I don't cover my face in my bag ever, even when it's cold and snowy. I always have a bivy with me when backpacking, just never really use it.

    Bivy Sacks. Feedback?

Many of the bivy's sit a bit close to my face for my comfort. I like to have plenty of breathing room.

    Snow Shoveling

Before I got the snowblower, I would go once down each side to clear a path for me to walk, then I go side to side working my way to the road

my new ultralight winter sleep system

My bag is by far the heaviest part of my pack. After doing some overnight snowshoe trips, weight is a huge deal in the winter. That looks like a great solution.

    Backcountry Trailer

I went so far as to start a trailer just like you are thinking about. I realized that for my needs it was either too little (family, 2 kids, etc.) or too much (just me solo). I ended up with a little Skamper and did a springover on it for family trips and for solo stuff I just pack light in...

Opposing the Potential Designation of a Greater Canyonland National Monument

They are both examples of SRMA's. An example of a NRA would be Glen Canyon NRA. In my experience it is easier to get a SRMA proposed and going over something larger and farther reaching like an NRA. Get maps and propose a SRMA to the Rec Planner. If you get him/her on board they can go a...

Opposing the Potential Designation of a Greater Canyonland National Monument

Think of the Sand Flats area in Moab, or Three Peaks near Cedar. Both are open to recreation, but not to extractive uses. Sand Flats charges a small fee, but Three Peaks is free to use. They are managed by the local BLM rec. departments.

Opposing the Potential Designation of a Greater Canyonland National Monument

I have a few brief comments while I take a break from planning my outdoor ethics presentation for the BLM tomorrow. SITLA lands are not technically "public" lands they are held in reserve to benefit Utah Schools. Whether that be from the outright sale, or leasing of the land or mineral rights...
