Thinking about getting a dirt bike... need advice

You guys do realize the 230 weighs within a few pounds of the 450s, right? Half the power and all the weight, the 230 is kind of a waste IMO. Like Corban said. :)

Dont forget the CRF230F is at half the price... That was a key factor at the begining of this. To get a street legal offroad bike for under $1500. I dont think one could find a WR250F, or a CRF450X for even close to that as everyone keeps hinting to. For a decent bike in that price range that will meet his criteria he will be looking at the KDX200, DR350, XR200, or a CRF230F. My recommendation was to avoid any bike that is built in the 80's as there is a world of differnce in suspension technologies.

Let's all head out to 5-mile pass and go ride around... he can try some different bikes and quickly feel which type of rides you want to have. I just got my new front tire on tonight so I am itching to get out riding somewhere anyways.

UNSTUCK

But stuck more often.
Now that's a good idea. Lets go ride this Saturday! I need to get some rides in as I'm sure I'll be selling my bike this summer (drz400e)

The deals are out there, I know of a few times people have picked up nice 450s for ~$1K. I'm not suggesting he go out and buy a 450 though, I'm just saying that weight was a big concern and if he's happy with the weight of a 230, then he'd be fine with just about any modern 4T in the 250-450 range. You can find DRZ400E's all day long within his price range. Put a lowering kit on it and it'll be the same height as a 230.

I agree, lets get out and ride. :) Saturday, 5-mile, who's in?

I'll let you all try my DRZ400E... you will all agree that it is the Lazy-Boy of 4 strokes. Its big, bloated, and too comfy (especially with my High/Soft foam seat from Guts)... and the engine just can't be killed. It's been running trails for 11 years now with only one needed valve adjustment.

I will be cutting and fabbing on my rear bumper Saturday Afternoon but I might be able to swing an early morning ride. Otherwise I will just have to ride with you all another time.

I'd like to head to five mile Saturday if I don't have to work :D Not sure how to suggest coordinating the ride (never been there riding before) but I have both my CR's I could bring if we need a spare bike.

Steve, I don't have any boots your size. Maybe someone has a set you can borrow--it would be worth looking into anyway. I do have a medium helmet I can throw in though if need be :)

there is absolutely no way I will ever be able to ride an xr400, no matter how good I get at riding. It's so heavy/awkward that I can barely pick it up, and it's so tall that I can't even get a tip-toe down (even on one side). I know because I tried to ride my dad's once, and I was a good 2" from my tip-toes touching.

I think that even an xr250 is going to be too big for me.

interesting... I wonder if you can run the 230 wheels on the 150 or if that'd just kill the power.

thanks for that link Caleb, that thread was really helpful. I'm going to have to ride Corban's bike around the block sometime. Sounds like a good solution.

exactly where im at. when i decide to quit working on my samurai for awhile then ill get a bike but I am on the short side too and although I wouldnt mind the power I just need a lower bike. A friend even tried to get me to take his tt600 lastnight and I wasnt even close to touching the ground and had to lean so far to the side to get on that it was just plain awkward.
